I'm adding some more formal schoolwork for my kindergartener this year. Here's what I have planned for him:
Reading practice - using Explode the Code and BOB Books (to start - other readers/books as desired/needed)
Math - Right Start level A
Handwriting - Handwriting Without Tears
His religion reading will be during morning basket - Bible Stories, Catholic Treasure Box books, etc. Our morning basket will also have picture book read alouds, some fun geography with "Around the World in 80 Tales" and finding things on the map, artist/picture study, and some music.
He'll also be able to tag along with whatever my 2nd grader is doing, particularly for history and science, as well as art projects, but I'm sure his interest will come and go (especially with history and science - he always does art projects with big brother). We also do nature walks, both as a family and with our homeschool group, as well as other field trips and group art lessons (also with our homeschool group).
See, when I write it all out like that, it sure looks like a lot! How does this look for a kinder? I'm envisioning him doing his basics - handwriting, reading and math - 3 to 4 times a week on average. He's pretty motivated to "do school." We do morning basket daily, and the content varies through the week.
Does that look about right for a kindergartener?

It might look like a lot but if you're only doing around 10 minutes (?) or so on each.. it's probably not near as much as it looks like. I tend to put stuff like that out for my Ks but don't put a time limit on it. They get it out when older siblings do and they can stop whenever they want.. so it varies

Sounds very similar to what we did this past year.  I begin ETC in 1st, but otherwise very similar. Really it was very relaxed.
Much like Jodie does, I let him stop when he wanted and if he didn't want to do "school" that was okay too. So we didn't finish RS A this last year, but will just be picking up where he feels comfortable in level B in the fall. I really stressed with perfection (mine) and completing things with my first K'er and I didn't want to repeat my mistakes this time around. He still thinks school is fun and is looking forward to next year.
I try to think back to when my father used to say he didn't even go to Kindergarten - wasn't required. 1st grade was just that, the 1st grade. I see K as a gentle intro to school. Just wished I had remembered that the first time around.

That's really good to keep in mind - being relaxed! I plan to do short lessons and definitely stop when he's done. I figure we'll get through what we get through and I'm not too worried about it.
