Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

5. Bad manners
"Peas and Honey" in The Rooster Crows by the Petershams.

I'm still thinking that the boy with the squirrel is from the same book. It looks like the Petersham style and the picture fits with the book. I have most of the early Caldecott books, and am thinking I'll have to add this one too. I don't know how I missed it!

Blessings,
Kym

The boy with the squirrel looks like it might come from An American ABC.

I know I'm familiar with this illustrator, but I can't place the illustrator or book

It would be a better picture if the squirrel was at the end of the barrel...

Yes, the one with the lion in the net is The Lion & the Mouse by Pinkney - that is one of the two recent ones from the post - 2010 Caldecott winner. A Sick Day for Amos McGee is the 2011 winner.

Kym, You are correct on both counts -- I just checked out the book to see!

The poem under the squirrel one is

There was a little man
He had a little gun
He put it in his pocket,
And away he did run.

The peas one:

I eat my peas with honey,
I've done it all my life.
It makes the peas taste funny,
But it keeps them on my knife.

I've been looking for that book for a long time, and finally succumbed to buying a used copy yesterday.

It's surprising that the Caldecott do not stay in print, or that our library doesn't carry all of them or feature them. They really are jewels to our picture books.
