Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Last year I used the one from Pioneer Woman: Hot Cross Buns.

They were really good and I will be using it again.

I actually find this to be true, so I like to have them on Holy Thursday. (Well that evening is the vigil of Good Friday, right? )

Inspired by Brother William's Year: A Monk at Westminster Abbey by Jan Pancheri

I know I'm posting so much from this book, but it's just chock full of ideas related to the Liturgical Year.

On Good Friday the monks were served one very large hot cross bun, to be shared by all.

I REALLY liked that idea!

I've seen recipes that aren't so sweet--more like regular bread dough with some chopped fruit mixed in. I recall reading that some monasteries passed these buns out to the poor on Good Friday (which someone may have already mentioned, but I didn't read the entire thread above). The ones sold in the stores today are a lot more like sweet rolls, not so much like basic bread rolls.

I agree, Caroline. My sister always makes hot cross buns and they are solid and not very high rising -- more healthy bread like than sweet rolls.
