Oh yes Alice!! These are the greatest. Start picking them up at used books sales and you'll have a good collection by the time ds is 7 or so. There are so many good living history stories among them and then some are just great stories about boys.
A few people mentioned Frog and Toad....we love 'em!

Wow, I love these suggestions, and I will look over them carefully and create a list of the ones we haven't read yet. Many, many thanks.
Now, is there a masculine equivalent to books like Betsy-Tacy? I was reading Betsy-Tacy aloud to my six year old earlier. Our boy was all ears listening. As I tucked him into bed, he asked, "Mommy, are they going to play with Tom some more? I like Tom. He has a loose tooth." (Tom is the little boy who comes to Betsy's party and says, "Let'th, thpeak pietheth.") Boy, I would love a whole series of books about Tom!

My 4 year old loves:
We are going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen. For days he went around saying "We are going on a Bear Hunt, We are going to catch a big one..."
He also loved the McDuff series by Rosemary Wells (but he was younger than four then...)
My 8yo loves Tin Tin and Asterix and Enid Blyton's Secret Seven and The Famous Five series.

Oh, Asterix....did our boys pore over those!!! Memorized them, loved the play on words.

MY boys loved the "Tom Playfair" series by Fr. Francis J. Finn, S.J. or any other of Fr. Finn books. They are great read alouds for the whole family but boys like them because a "true boy" is the main character.
My youngest boy, now 13, learn to read with the Billy and Blaze books. He loved them!

Looks like you have lots of great suggestions as it is. :)
Oh I might as well add the boy activities since you asked. I sometimes get tired of the blocks, trains, trucks and swordplay. I wonder if your son can be incorporated in the girls' games. Dolls need houses, transportation to parties and knights to fight off dragons. My boys love rough and tumble. One game we have devised is mom curls into a ball and they climb onto me as I try to throw them off. little energy on my part but lots of fun. I just remembered you are pregnant. Opps! Maybe afterwards?

I just noticed that Bethlehem Books is bringing out Alvin's Secret Code, by Clifford B. Hicks. I loved these books as a kid (one of the books was made into a Wonderful World of Disney episode!). I recently read this book and The Marvelous Inventions of Alvin Fernald to my children and they loved them, too.
Some of the later books in the series aren't as "inventive" (pun intended!), but I'm glad to see this classic back in print.

My oldest son loves funny books like Chewie Louie, or The Bike Lesson, but his all time favorite is Verdi.
Believe it or not, they really enjoy Miss Suzy. The soldiers save Miss Suzy and her home from a band of ill-mannered squirrels.
As for longer books, the boys in particular enjoyed Pinnochio (especially if you can get the unabridged full color version illustrated by Atilio Mussino and translated by Carol de la Chiesa). They liked The Rats of NIMH and Peter's Moose.
And though this is one is not only for boy's, Bagels From Benny is a must read especially during Lent!

The Peter and Lotta adventure ones are big hits here -- we originally got them for my 6 yod but her 7 yob really enjoys listening to them too!

My 4 yo boy likes Bible Stories (we use the Catholic Picture Bible from Lovasik) - King David is one of his favorites. Also he likes a children's stations of the cross by Lovasik and the St. Michael. Anything about farm animals, or machines and trucks will keep his interest.

We Help Daddy (a golden book and not quite the same literary merit as some of the others but so rare to find good books with a positive father as the main focus of the story.

The Knight of the White Cross by Henty (just hates the ending where the knight gets married after being excused from vows in the order of St John - but most of the book is one adventure after another where this young knight almost single handedly (through wits and skill) defeats the Moslem enemy that is besieging Christendom and raiding shipping in the Meditterranean).
Mostly, they like action packed historical fiction or non-fiction history and science. The olders (esp the 6 yo still like a lot of the books listed for the 4 yo). The 4 yo likes some of the books the bigger boys do - but depends on the day and how much we read at one sitting.

I just discovered that this book was back in print! I loved it as a child (I know, I'm a girl) but the main character is a boy, and well, it belongs on everyone's shelves (girls too)...
