Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

OK...so as not to scandalize my friends with anti-squirrel bias, I want to start a thread to share favorite squirrel books. Along with acorns a great fall topic . There are some really cute squirrel books. This one almost (I said almost) makes me feel something less than total distain for them.

Earl the Squirrel (Don Freeman)

And I do love Miss Suzy (Miriam Young)!

Sara Squirrel and the Lost Acorns by Julie Sykes -- ALL TIME FAVORITE BOOK!!

The Busy Little Squirrel by Nancy Tafuri

Nuts to You by Lois Ehlert (didn't Melinda link this on our game thread??? I think she did)

Gray Squirrel at Pacific Avenue

Letters to Anyone and Everyone by Toon Tellegen -- many animals are featured "letter writers" here, squirrels are among them. We love this book!! HT goes to Lindsay for telling me about it!!

The Squirrel's Birthday and Other Parties by Toon Tellegen (similar to Letters to Anyone and Everyone)

The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin by Beatrix Potter

Chessie the Long Island Squirrel by Sachiko Kimoto

Red Squirrels by Tom Tew and Niall Benvie

Also, be sure to check out Dawn's unit study on Squirrels - Squirrel Nutkin - A Winter Unit Study

You're very good to indulge us, Mary!!    Perhaps we can cleanse your palate so-to-speak by starting an owl thread!

LOL! Yes, very accommodating of you, Mary!

I don't think I can add to the squirrel book list. You ladies got them all, I think !But I will think on it some more.

And an owl unit would be pretty popular right now with that new Guardians movie coming out. I KNOW with Mary around we have some old threads we could revive!

Micawber by John Lithgow. It is just precious. And written in verse, too.

Thanks for all the recommendations. I am sure my squirrel-loving children will be happy to see some of these titles when they arrive from the library. I guess we're going to be following a squirrel trail.

When I was putting Earl the Squirrel on hold, I noticed that our library will be getting One More Acorn. Don Freeman's son finished his father's unfinished second book about Earl the squirrel.

Christine, thanks for sharing this info - great news. I do love Earl the Squirrel and the story about it being published 25 years after Don Freeman's death is really interesting. I'm excited to see more of these unpublished and partial finished stories come to life.    I just reserved a copy from our library. Thanks again!!

Just found this OOP title, haven't read it but it has to be good - written and illustrated by two great talents of the Golden era.

The Little Lost Squirrel - Alvin Tresset, Leonard Weisgard

Squirrels - Brian Wildsmith

Well, this is a spendy, oop print book, but just got it from interlibrary loan. It gives general behavioral and biological info about squirrels - the good and the bad side of squirrels is presented.

Quote:
Squirrels are delightful little creatures, but can be very destructive. In a garden they like to pull up new plants, eat bulbs and even bite off the tops of very young trees.

Quote:
Sometimes squirresl will steal birds' eggs, and they are very fond of mushrooms.

So they don't just glorify the cuteness of squirrels...

I'd better stop reading and posting squirrel books or you all are goin' to get the wrong idea and think I actually like 'em...

This isn't completely about a squirrel, but a squirrel, hedgehoge, and bear are waiting to see snow before their hibernation.

Waiting for Winter by Sebastian Meschenmoser. The illustrations of the animals are a bit unique -- took me awhile to realize the artist was drawing "tired" eyes -- the animals are having a hard time shutting down.

This is a hilarious book. I've mentioned it before in another thread.

This is one of our favorite winter books, too, Jenn! We discovered it at a flea market one year. There it was - unceremoniously hidden under a pile of other books. We brought it home and read it every year at this time. It's a real delight and I find the illustrations to be quite intriguing, too!

For you, Mary! I saw this one in the CHC catalog and knew you wouldn't want to miss it . I am so buying this book!

From Amazon:
In the year 1214, a baby squirrel falls from the nest and lands in the passing saddlebag of a 13-year-old boy. Still blind, deaf, hairless and unable to eat solid food, there is little hope for Puttermunch's survival. Moved by the persistent pleading of his distraught mother, a selection of five squirrels set out to find Puttermunch, launching a perilous and life-altering journey on the Way of St. James in Spain. The road is fraught with failure for Billowtail, Tippy, Nip, Sugarcoat and Sir Sniff, until these well-meaning tree squirrels, born to be loners and hoarders, learn the value of community and self-sacrifice.
