Calling all sewers.....

My Rowenta Sewing Iron finally died after 12 years (it was a slow painful death).

Does anyone have any great recommendations? I have been drooling over this iron from Vermont Country Store for years. But, I am not sure if this is what I want or not.

Any suggestions?

Betsy, I know women who really prefer this kind of iron over a steam iron. Just be careful with synthetics.
I have never had an extra iron for sewing so I couldn't say which sort is better.
I know - not much of a help am I?

I don't really have a separate iron for sewing, I just only iron when I sew!

I think it was the rowenta that my MIL got.. she really wanted the more pointed end.. that it's easier than your standard iron for getting into pleats and creases and such for sewing.

I don't believe I've actually bought my own iron yet

I was given one for going away to college, and then I think we might have gotten one for our wedding.. or if I bought that one it was a very limited budget purchase.. then a friend gave me an extra iron she had when that one died.

But you can always use a spray bottle with water with the dry iron if you see you need some steam.

This is what I have been doing for a few years, as the steam part of my iron went long before it actually died.

Jodie, this iron was a shower gift for me. I have never purchased my own iron. Maybe that is why I am having such a had time deciding?

I like Rowenta irons but the ones made in Germany --NOT the ones made in China (they don't last!)

I got my current Rowenta at Costco and I love it because it has that pointy tip.

Thanks Michele. My old iron was a Rowenta and it worked great for many years. However, so many reviews of the newer Rowenta's weren't good. I bet that your keen observations of Made in Germany vs. China is the difference.

I am still undecided as what to get, but I need to do some sewing soon!!!!

Well...my search for a quility iron has proven it's self to be VERY frustrating.

I talked to Eugen at Sew True and he recommended thereReliable Prof. Steam Iron for a home sew. HOWEVER, after talking with him it seems that all irons are only designed to last for 3 years!!! He even went to far to say that I should consider having my old one fixed (which I sadly don't think it can be).

It is one of my huge pet-peeves at how products are being made to only last a short amount of time.

So, I don't know if I really want to fork over $$$$ for a product that will only last 3 years.

Bumping this up to see if anyone has any new favorites.

The reviews at Amazon for the latest generation of Rowentas are pretty mixed. I have a 5 yo Rowenta that is OK, but it's not so great that I want to buy another. Also, I believe Costco no longer carries them.

My mother would like a new iron for Christmas, and iron shopping is painful!

Edited to add that the Rowenta I mentioned above just flat out stopped working. :(

We tried two Rowenta made in Germany and they both failed in a few months, with a leaking mess.

We tried another, TFal, It is not great. This is so hard to find a good iron. The Vermont one won't really steam seams open....I do think steam is quite necessary.

Thanks for the link and the feedback, MIchelle and Jenn.

I have also been looking at this iron from Maytag.
It has mostly five star reviews, but only 20 reviews. Still, no one is crying that it's a lemon (yet).

I wonder why we can put people on the moon but we can't make a quality iron????

Because "we" would rather get something super cheap and throw away than pay for quality I guess.. and so you get even companies that are known for quality making choices to be "throw away".
