We have discussed poetry selections and collections several times, but don't have a thread dedicated to picture books of and about poems and poetry. There are lots of different categories within that but thought it would be fun to brainstorm the best resources on the topic. Since this is National Poetry Month, what better time to wax poetic... 
Like I said there are a variety of types of books, so let's categorize them so everyone knows what kind of book it is.
Picture Books where the text is a single poem, illustrated (classic poems):

Dark Emperor and Other Poems of the Night - Joyce Sidman (illustrated by Rick Allen)
I think the series "Poetry for Young People" is wonderful. There are individual books on a variety of poets (Kipling, Poe, Frost, Sandburg, Dickinson, Browning, Hughes, Longfellow, Whitman, Yeats, and more) - includes biography info and collection poems.

Ellie, one of my sisters raves about Susan Jeffers, plus "Stopping by the Woods..." has special significance, so I will have to check out your recommendation.
I know that most of us know about it, but I have to mention Robert Louis Stevenson's A Child's Garden of Verses illustrated by Tasha Tudor. I also like the out-of-print Little Golden Book, A Child's Garden of Verses, illustrated by Eloise Wilkin.

We're making a concerted effort to write more poetry this month. R is for Rhyme: A Poetry Alphabet is a great way to do this. We take one letter/focus every couple of days. We were doing these one at a time during our Fine Arts Fridays, but we got behind. What better time than National Poetry month to catch up!!! There is a free teacher's guide that coordinates with the book! I've found it VERY helpful!
I took note of some of the great books above that we don't have...adding in some of my favorite poetry books that haven't been mentioned yet:

Read Aloud Rhymes for the Very Young by Jack Prelutsky - This is a favorite here. I think it's oop now; I found it at a used book store years ago. Delightful and short little verses for young children. Very amusing!
The Real Mother Goose - I prefer the Blanche Fisher Wright illustrations
First Poems of Childhood illustrated by Tasha Tudor
Picture Books which are collections by single poet:
Goops and How To Be Them by Gelett Burgess - collection of rhymes on manners and politeness
Kate Greenaway's Family Treasury - there are actually selections here from several Greenaway books. I like the selections from Marigold Garden.

We just bought a 4 book pack of Poetry for Young People books from Scholastic. I am over the moon over these books. Robert Frost, Lewis Carroll, Emily Dickinson and Poetry Of Animals was in the pack.
We have been using R is for Rhyme to write our own poetry as well.

Dark Emperor and Other Poems of the Night - Joyce Sidman (illustrated by Rick Allen)
It's beautifully illustrated with woodcut illustrations - I'm very partial to those so this is a treat. Poems are good as well. Learn about the nocturnal animals portrayed in each poem. And having the "dark emperor" be a Great Horned Owl has added appeal here.

I just wanted to add these since they are in our Poetry baskets this term.
For My Littles:
A Child's Garden of Verses by Robert Louis Stevenson (we really enjoy the art in this version).
The Real Mother Goose with Blanche F. Wright illustrations (as previously mentioned)
The Helen Oxenbury Nursery Collection (also lovely pictures)
For my oldder dds:
We are using the Poetry for Young People collection especially American Poetry
Sleeping Bear Press State Books (although not poetry they are written in a very rhythmic form, my girls are enjoying these very much).

Thank you for reviving this thread. Just yesterday I told the girls we need to get back to our poetry readings.
Sadness is the fact that all we've done so far this yr w/ poetry is Chelsea has used "Teaching 10 Fabulous Forms of Poetry" (by Scholastic Professional Bks) and Annie reads a variety from her Seton readers.
I soooo want to get back to great poetry offered via picture books. To me it's more meaningful and visual.
To add a book to the list (for those looking for classical poems), I have a book from Oma and Opa's house that my dad loves:
The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes/illustrated by Neil Waldman

We are reading a whole bunch of "Casey at the Bat" picture books. It's been fun. I think I do a specific thread for those.

One of the poetry books I remember from my elementary days is more poetry than pictures, but I see it has been re-published with new illustrations. The poems are each about a different color. Here's the link and an example of the kind of poetry:
Hailstones and Halibut Bones
Blue
Blue is a heron
A sapphire ring,
You can smell blue
In many a thing:
Gentians and larkspur,
Forget-me-nots, too.
And if you listen
You can hear blue
In wind over water

I was tremendously impressed by this book as a child--perhaps the combination of color and poetry mesmerized me.

This book is a must have for your home library! This is one for all the year, illustrating the change of seasons so beautifully through the simple Haiku and gorgeous illustrations. There are 13 Haikus. The order is based on the Gregorian Calendar and Northern Hemisphere, but this can easily be used for those in the Southern Hemisphere because no months are mentioned.
I'm such a huge fan of Ilse Plume, and this new book does not disappoint! |

Bumping this in case anybody else is in a poetry rut. We've enjoyed a couple of collections illustrated by Gyo Fujikawa. I can't wait to check out some of these! We read some out of a few non-illustrated collections, but I'm finding that having the illustrations is really important for my pre-reader to develop a relationship with a poem.
