Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

This is a forum for the discussion of educational theories and ideas. Charlotte Mason, classical, Montessori, unschooling, and other educational pedagogy that you might use or have questions or concerns about are all welcome topics for this forum. Educational pedagogy as described by this statement of Pope Pius XI cannot be discussed on this board:

Divini Illius Magistri wrote:
Every method of education founded, wholly or in part, on the denial or forgetfulness of original sin and of grace, and relying on the sole powers of human nature, is unsound. Such, generally speaking, are those modern systems bearing various names which appeal to a pretended self-government and unrestrained freedom on the part of the child, and which diminish or even suppress the teacher's authority and action, attributing to the child an exclusive primacy of initiative, and an activity independent of any higher law, natural or divine, in the work of his education.

If you have any trouble deciding whether a topic should go in Philosophy of Education or in Living Learning, think of Living Learning as the place for the "how to" and "what to" of a Living Learning life. Philosophy of Education is the forum where your questions about "Why..." "Is it OK to.." and "how do I discern..." can be worked out within the framework of our Catholic Faith and a Living Learning perspective.

Philosophy of Education is the place to bring your questions about how curriculum programs compare and why or whether they should be used.   Living Learning is the forum for the "how to's" on using standard curricula and fitting them into a Living Learning lifestyle.

Philosophy of Education is also the place for retakes of discussions that have moved from discussion of methods and practices in the Living Learning forum to questions and criticisms about the theory or philosophy behind them.   In these cases, we will divide the thread into two strands so that those who are interested in the "how" can stay with the thread in Living Learning, while those more interested in the philosophy or "tough questions" can follow the new strand over at Philosophy of Education.

Honest inquiry and discussion are very welcome, since these things help us to come to new insights. However, direct personal criticisms and negative critiques of individuals are beside the point in these discussions and ought to be avoided. Test Everything; Hold Fast to What is Good and Taking the Choicest Parts provide some ideas on how we can discern educational ideas and methods through a Catholic filter.
