Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We just listened to one of the kids read, Mercedes and the Chocolate Pilot: the true story of the Berlin Airlift and the Chocolate that fell from the sky by: Margo Theis Raven.

The pilot, Gail Halvorsen, will be turning 89 on October 10. I was thinking it would be cool for whoever wants to participate, to send a card with a Hershey's kiss in it as a gesture of our appreciation for his concern for the kids of Berlin...

If I can find an address, would anyone like to participate?

Please post here and let me know!

Thanks!

We're game, Maria! That's a very "sweet" idea. This is so very fitting, too, as it looks like this month marks the 60th anniversary of the end of the Berlin Air Lift.

When we were at the National Museum of the US Air Force last month we saw their exhibit on the Berlin Airlift with a section on the "the chocolate pilot." (This by the way is a great FREE museum if you are ever in Dayton, OH.)

I love Mercedes and the Chocolate Pilot.

The publisher, Sleeping Bear Press, has a lesson plan/unit to go with the book.

PBS has a film about the Berlin Air Lift with specifc section on the Chocolate Pilot. The PBS site also includes a teacher's guide.

Some bio info on Gail Halvorson.
Interview with Gail Halvorson on History Net.

sounds like fun - just requested the book at the library.

We missed the "chocolate pilot" section at the USAF Museum in Dayton, OH. I guess we'll just have to go back. I don't think the kids will mind

Keep us posted and we'll join in your 2009 chocolate airlift!

One question... I love the symbolism of the Hershey's Kiss, but would a mini bar go through the mail easier? Would the USPS charge extra for an envelope with a Kiss inside? Anyone know?

I was thinking the same thing about a bar being easier to mail. Anything that adds dimension to an envelope is going to cost more (even if weight is still low) because it can't go through the automated envelope machines.

Hey, I was reading up on the story and found this webpage which tells where he lives. Then, I was reading over here and found this:

The book can be obtained from Gail S. Halvorsen,19 E Southfield Road, Spanish Fork, Utah 84660 ( 1 May--mid December each year) and 1525 Dove Way, Amado, AZ 85645 (mid December--30 April) , for $20.00.

Awesome, Charlotte! Let's do it!

Mail whatever chocolatey goodie you feel inspired to! Since his birthday is October 10, maybe we could start sending things by the 5th. How does that sound?

I love that you all are game to do this with us!

Thank you!

I wish there was a way we could confirm this information. According to my web sleuthing, those pages were last updated in December and July of 2008 respectively. I did find a phone number for him listed in the online white pages for that address. Does anyone have any ideas about how to verify his address aside from calling him, which I guess I could do if I had to?

Perhaps the publishing house listed on the web pages (the 'contact us' page) can confirm the address?

....Hey Girls,

I actually tried two phone humbers that I was given by his publisher. I was unable to reach anyone at either number but both of the addresses that she gave me are the same as the ones that Charlotte posted.

So, let's send them to the Utah address.

Maybe we could include a little note letting him know how touched we were by his thoughtfulness????

Just an idea!

Thanks for doing this with our family!

You are so brave to call! I feel confident now that these addresses must be the correct ones for him. I'm so excited. We just picked the book up from the library today and will probably read it next week. I can't wait to tell the kids about this idea! They are going to be so excited!!!
Thanks Maria!
