Hi, all.
In California.......high school students must have a year of government and a semester of economics.
I have MODG syllabus.........and I REALLY like it........covers some of the Summa.....The Federalists etc......but I do not feel it covers much about how our government REALLY works............nor much on economics.
What have any of you done to provide your children a LIVING books & REAL LEARNING education on these two topics?
I really need ideas please. I am going to have my first senior next year

The two older kids are REALLY enjoying the course of Bach.......and highly recommend it. This economic course seems very thorough, and not very politically correct 
I could not find an actual amer. gov't course there....
so, what do all of you do?

Chari,
Well, while I'm on my Amanda Bennett unit studies kick  , let me recommend her 4-week American Government study. I bought it a couple years back when she came to talk at our summer conference. We still haven't used it but I"m determined to do so this spring! 
If anything, it will give you a list of books to use and lots of links for your student to check out. And it's thoroughly Christian oriented (even if not Catholic).
For economics, a friend and I are planning to use Whatever Happened to Penny Candy? with our 12 yr olds.
Of course, we were suppose to start the school year with her doing art with the young ones while I did Penny Candy with the older ones. We were going to meet once a week. That was back in September and we still haven't started.
I blame the hurricane...
Both studies are not lengthy or rigorous, but it's exposure non-the-less.

We've used:
Economics: Work and Prosperity by Russell Kirk. It is an Abeka highschool textbook, but Kirk is an eminent Catholic thinker. I got the book second-hand at abebooks.
Kirk Center -- 10 conservative principles
Economics in One Lesson -- very readable. Neat, I just found the first edition of this classic online. But we got it from the library.
Free to Choose -- a conservative classic, highly recommended by my DH who took an economics minor in college.
For government, really, the federalists and anti-federalists and LB's other recommendations really gave Liam a good foundation. You'd be surprised. Also, we checked out those little middle-school type books you can easily find at the library -- about the constitution, the branches of government, and so on. They were a nice intro. I missed all Am gov't myself because I went to highschool in Switzerland, so I still need DH to explain how the House and Senate actually work, myself!

Oh, Chari, I also got this book
Land of Fair Play from Chelsea's http://www.bywayofthefamily.com/
this summer. I have only skimmed it, so far. It has that textbook feel but it might be useful as a sort of general intro/survey for a gov't course.
Want to come to my house and look at my homeschool closet????

Might I suggest the Boy Scout Citizenship in the Nation merit badge activities for an American Government overview? You can find them at Citizenship in the Nation Merit Badge. If you need more printed material, consider buying the merit badge pamphlet that goes with the badge. It has more details about the U. S. Government and how it works.

The resources I've found that are set aside for our son's Senior year American Govt./Economics course are:
Government 101 Packet You can see sample pages there.
And one I don't have, but found on christian books that seems no nonsense, and consise that may be a good resource is this:
Everything Govt Book
There are also other books like this like The Idiot's Guide to the American Govt. and Barron's Painless American Government.
I find books like this to really be helpful resources.
We'll use videos as well such as:
Standard Deviants
And one I just found a great deal on that I think I'll buy right now because it's on sale:
Understanding Government
We'll also use the website:
Ben's Guide to the Government
This site, if you go to the main homepage has a guide for all of the different levels we teach.
So basically, I'm going to pull together the course from many different resources. We have to do a half year of Govt. and a half year of Economics, so pulling together many resources for me makes the most sense.

Hi Chari,
Ok, this doesn't sound like anything you're looking for but if want something historical, we have the game Made for Trade.
We also have The Oregon Trail CD-Rom and you have to learn how to barter and conserve.
Maybe this would be better for your youngers! Tell 'em, "Hi!" from the Pecelis!
