No, this is very cool! Thanks so much!
An accompanying book to read, at least her chapter on how Sr. Mary Jean started her scissored cuttings is Shepherd's Tartan. It's the story of her vocation, but it's very humorous about the "black-handled scissors." Our family talked about that for a long time. Not exactly on the Marian theme...actually it would be fodder against the unschooling thread.  Mother Superior made her try it, so she did under obedience. She proved to be a natural!!!

Another thought, piggybacking Elizabeth's mention of Our Lady of the Snows. Another feast day to add is the Dedication of the Basilica of St. Mary Major, Optional Memorial, August 5, which is official St. Mary of the Snow. It's for a dedication of a Church, but it's a Church dedicated to Mary. 
I started wondering how many basilicas are in the world that are dedicated to Mary. Cathedrals would be my next pondering. A short search I found this site, but I'm sure there is better information out there.
Pick a few of the famous churches, as you already mentioned the National Shrine which is now a Basilica, and perhaps St. Mary Major and Notre Dame are three that immediately come to mind. Differences in Church architecture, stained glass or the art could be incorporated into the notebook, intertwining the particular devotion the Church is dedicated.

The UDayton site also has these activity pages devoted to Mary's life. There is one toward the end that has names around the world for Mary, and a crossword puzzle for Marian feast days.

Yesterday was the feast of Our Lady of Prompt Succor. (Patroness of New Orleans, LA) NPR had a great story about this feast and the devotion of the Ursulines to Our Lady on Saturday's Weekend Edition show.

Yes, I remember...that's why I freaked Saturday when we heard the radio broadcast. So, today, I talked about it with my children and they actually remembered the whole broadcast...  They liked seeing the image I found of the Sweetheart Statue and hearing more about how it came to the USA. I'm hoping to find some more info about the Ursulines to share with them for a religious rabbit trail.
AND!!! My daughter asked, "When are we going to learn about Our Lady of the Snows?" (Words to warm a Catholic mommy's heart!!!)
I'm so thankful for this Marian notebook idea. It's starting out wonderfully in our home!

The icons of the "Tender Mercy" type show Christ Child pressing his left cheek close to the right cheek of his Mother. Here the Theotokos again represents the Church of Christ, thereby displaying the fullness of love between God and man, a love that can only be achieved within the bosom of church, the Mother. Love here bridges heaven and earth, the things of God and the things of men; and this unity is expressed in the touching of the faces and the halos. The Theotokos is pensive, as she presses her Son to herself. She envisions His way of the cross, His life full of sufferings. Among the icons of this type, "Our Lady of Vladimir" is the one most widely known and loved by believers. It is not accidental, that this very icon has become one of the greatest of holy Russian objects. There are several reasons for this, including its ancient origin; again associated with the name of the Evangelist Luke, and the numerous events related to its transfer from Kiev to Vladimir and later to Moscow, as well as multiple occasions of the delivery of Moscow from the plundering raids of the Mongol hordes. However, the very character of the icon found a positive response in the hearts of the Russian people. The idea of sacrificial service for people has always been near and dear to Russians. The exalted grief of the Theotokos who has brought her Son into this world of cruelty and sufferings, and her pain are very much in keeping with the innermost feelings of the common Russian people. Found something else about it...
The Virgin bends tenderly towards her Divine Son, while he looks back towards her lovingly. Christ as a child is usually depicted with the face of an adult, not an infant, to portray that even though he took on our human form, he was always consciously the All-Knowing God.

The Andrew sisters (of pro-life rescue fame) have a book entitled Lovely Lady Dressed in Blue which fits perfectly with this study. You can see some of the inside at this amazon link.

Hello All,
I've finally figured out how to join the message board!  In iconography of Our Lady, the three stars represent her perpetual virginity, before, during and after birth. Often one of stars is covered by the Christ child, so two are evident, and one hidden.
