I agree about the age. That's why I suggested it. I read it as a teenager, probably 16-17? It's such a vivid memory, I remember where I was reading it. It was a summer visit to my Grandmother's in Arkansas, and I stayed up late to read it.

Another idea, although I haven't read it, I really like the Bunson's works:

Saint Damien of Molokai: Apostle of the Exiled by Matthew and Margaret Bunson.

An earlier book by Maggie (sic) Bunson gives an overview of the Catholic faith in Hawaii: Faith in Paradise. It's a bit harder to find. (Her Founding of Faith on the early American founding is also really good. It was written to commemorate the Bicentennial of US.)

Did you know Robert Louis Stevenson wrote a biography on St. Damien?

I didn't either until I was reading Michael Novak's pieces on Joe Paterno, and mentioned the criticism that Stevenson received regarding his work and Father Damien. I'm not trying to veer into another subject, but thought I would mention the current events marking this -- I had no idea!

I know you didn't ask this, Mary, but I'm going to suggest a trilogy that would be suitable for middle school to early teens. I love anything by Eva K. Betz, and she has three books regarding the holy workers at Molokai:

Yankee at Molokai: Brother Ira Dutton
The Quiet Flame: Mother Marianee Cope (soon to be canonized in October)
Knight of Molokai: Father Damien

Thanks - this is all helpful. One of the reasons I am interested is that with his canonization a few years ago the feast day he was given is May 10. That is my oldest son's birthday - ds didn't have a prominent saint for his day. I only recently really realized this connection and for various reasons would like to get my son "connected" to St. Damien. I thought a good biography would be a start - and the ones that cover a lot of history of Hawaii at the time (like it sounds like the Bunson ones do) I think would really be appealing to him as a history buff.

I did come across the Robert Louis Stevenson connections and biography earlier. When my daughter did a history fair project several years ago on the history of nuns in nursing and the medical fields, she covered Bl. Marianne Cope (soon to be Hawaii's next saint!) and the Robert Louis Stevenson info came up then. There is a reference to his lettter of defense of St. Damien in the beginning of this thread, too.
