Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Karen Lynn Williams & Khadra Mohammed

Two little girls living in an Afghanistan-Pakistan refugee camp befriend each other when relief workers bring in used clothing. They each find one shoe of a pair, and solve the problem of having four feet, but only two sandals, as they go about their daily routines. One girl leaves for America and the shoe becomes a symbol of their friendship.

This book had a big impact on my girls. We've been praying for refugee children ever since reading this book. And, they want to know more about refugee camps. It helps them to understand the "donating/tithing/sacrificial giving" concept more. It's very touching and I get choked up at the end each time.

friendship america children economics war sharing survival routines wants needs scarcity poverty donations natural disaster

We checked this book out from the library last week and my kids love it as well. I think it is very well done.

It is a "choker."

Suzanne, your girls have the best imaginations! How many kids play "refugee camp?"
