Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I would like to do a lent calendar this year to countdown the days to Easter with my young children.

Do you do a lent calendar? What do you do?

Does anyone have any suggestions for a resource that gives daily readings during lent for young children?

We do one every year. You can read about them and see them on my blog:

Lenten Calendar 1

Lenten Calendars 2 & 3

I can't help you on the daily readings but I will be anxiously looking forward to someone else's suggestion.

crucifix stickers

Found these stickers, don't know if they would be good to use for the calendar or not? It's a reminder of what we are leading up to, but not sure....

We used Bitty Baby doll shoes to trace for steps to Easter on a poster board one year. I love the Lamb idea...thanks for sharing your links "waltzing Matilda".

Hi Sylvia - a few years ago Julie at Trinity Acres did a wonderful Lenten calendar. Last year I just updated it for 2008. I am not sure if I will update it again this year - or use Charlotte's idea which I really like.

Here is Julie's calendar:Lenten Calendar

I have some other Lent ideas here

Dawn has another version from a couple of years ago. I remember thinking at the time that I would remember hers if we ever had a year when I just didn't get around to drawing one.

Here is Dawn's calendar.

I just love everyone's Lenten Calendars!!

For the past five years or so, our family has made a Lenten Calendar based on the suggestion in Guiding your Catholic Preschooler. Here is a link to the Lenten Calendar we made last year.

As for readings, last year we made a Jesus Tree using the kit from Scripture Trees. Each day during lent we read a story from the Bible, picking up where the Jesse Tree left off, and going through the life of Christ. I did post pictures of each weeks ornaments, readings, as well as an activity for each day. (Those posts can be found under the label Jesus Tree.)

Wow Jessica - what incredible ideas. Thank you so much for sharing. I have to link your blog to my Lenten posts. I have to find some time later today to read everything in more detail. I LOVE the Jesus tree idea - the Jesse tree is a highlight of our Advent. Just not sure I can do it before Lent starts. Does Scripture Trees still do the kit? THANK YOU. (And what a beautiful blog - I am looking forward to visiting)

I just want you all to be aware that this calendar was originally published by Dumb Ox publications (no website)- it looks like Julie posted that calendar when they went out of business but I think they are back in business now - Julie posted the latest information here.

Thank you for all the great ideas - lent is coming up fast!!

Thanks Jessica! I just called and ordered a Jesus Tree. She said she still had some in stock, but not many.

I am so excited about this. We loved doing the Jesse Tree at Advent for the first time this year and this will be a great way to continue!

Jessica,
What did you find was the best way to attach the ornaments to the tree so that you can re-use it?

I spoke with the owner on the 12th of January, and she said that when they run out this year (she had 60 left at the time) they will not be making more due to a upcoming move. The kit is only $10.00 plus shipping, and it is so nice to have all the felt and patterns to work with!!

The felt will stick pretty well to the Jesus tree on it's own (it's like a flannel board, since it's also made of felt), but I used a very light coat of fabric adhesive spray to make the backs of the ornaments a little stickier so they wouldn't fall of as much with my children constantly brushing past the tree.

I am glad to hear that they still have more in stock and that you were able to order one! Once it is made you will be able to use it year after year, which I love!! =)

God Bless,

OH! And Marilyn, last year I made the ornaments one week at a time throughout lent, which was very doable. It would be tough to get it all done before Lent, but then again, some of your children are older than mine and probably would be able to help with all the cutting!

Last year someone posted a link for a Lenten calendar. It was about 3 pages and in a PDF format. Anyone remember this?

I do believe Emmanuel Books is carrying the Dumb Ox Calendars. There is also an Eastertide Calendar and Lenten Calendar for Advults. I haven't received my order yet, so I can't confirm completely, but they look similar.

And Alice, I think the .pdf file was from Julie, and it's now not there.

Charlotte, I am going to try your lent calendar...like the path with squares.

I have a question - do you all color in a square each day on the "map?"
