Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I need bird picture books...similar to Make Way for Ducklings. I'm planning a 4H project on birds and would love to have books to read to fill in time when/if needed. This is for 7-8year olds.

Anyone have some faves?

Well gosh, there's nothing quite like Make Way for Ducklings - such a sweet classic, but I presume you mean in general, books that are more a story than informational, yet probably not with the birds having attributes that make them more human than animal. Am I on the right track?

How to Heal a Broken Wing – Bob Graham (pigeon)
White Owl, Barn Owl – Nicola Davis (barn owl)
Have you seen my duckling - Nancy Tafuri (duck)
Luck - Jean Craighead George (sandhill crane)
Welcome, Brown Bird - Mary Lyn Ray (wood thrush)
Angelo - David Macaulay (pigeon)
Only a Pigeon - Jane Kurtz (pigeon)
Fly, Homer, Fly - Bill Peet (pigeon)
Cock-a-doodle Dudley - Bill Peet (rooster)
Honey, Honey, Lion! - Jan Brett (honeyguide)

Oh and I see Suzanne has posted in the time I was compiling lists. I concur with her choices so didn't duplicate them.

Homeschool Share has units for several books, as well as lapbooks for several kinds of birds and for backyard birds.

Also, a unit for The Boy Who Drew Birds (Audubon) was recently added, but it hasn't made it to the connection page yet.

HSS also has a lapbook for Albert.

Adding:
"Pelican" by Brian Wildsmith
"The Spooky Tale of Prewitt Peacock" by Bill Peet
"Just Plain Fancy" by Patricia Polacco
those last two are about peacocks...then you're getting into poultry. There was a thread started after this post on chicken books...picture books featuring chickens with lots of ideas in that direction.

Another by Jean George is "The Hole In The Tree" that has b&w pictures and a longer story about a hole that a bark beetle starts - and how a variety of birds and other animals use it through the years.

2 books about owls:

Owl Babies by Martin Waddell - 3 baby owls anxiously await the return of their mother who has been out hunting. The illustrations are beautiful and the story depicts a very positive, loving relationship between siblings.

Owl Moon by Jane Yolen- a young girl goes on her first owl spotting walk at night with her father.

Seconding Pelican by Brian Wlidsmith.

It's a sweet story, and my dc really liked the flip pages.

On the Wing (David Elliott) - really lovely picture book of bird poetry. Each double page illustration includes a poem introducing a different species of bird - some familiar, so less common.
