Find any good picture books on Thanksgiving? I have only a few on my shelf, but one I enjoy in black and white drawings is The Pilgrim’s Party – A Really Truly Story by Sadyebeth and Anson Lowitz. It's an older book, I think originally printed in the 1930s.
It had an interesting claim that since the Mayflower landed on a Monday and there was no washing on board all those days, laundry was done that day...and since then, Monday has been wash day in America. Has anyone read that anywhere else?

I love to pull out the Thanksgiving books each year and spend a few weeks before the holiday reading them with the girls. I sent a list of Thanksgiving picture books to the CCM list recently. I'll copy it below:

Here's one of our favorites -- Cranberry Thanksgiving by the Devlins. It is a great story about not judging folks or assuming things AND the cranberry bread recipe at the end is really good!
I also like to read Cynthia Rylant books -- When I Was Young in the Mountains or Appalachia -- I always think of the mountain folks when Thanksgiving rolls around (a hold over from too many Waltons growing up?).

Our too! I'm going to pull it out now and will probably make the trip to the library for more tomorrow. I'll check out everyone's suggestions. Then it'll be time to think about Christ the King day and Advent (Jenn, that's your cue  )....whew!!

Besides several of those already mentioned, we like Outlaw Thanksgiving, Three Young Pilgrims, Mousekin's Thanksgiving, An Old-Fashioned Thanksgiving (by Louisa May Alcott), Goody O'Grumpity, and N.C. Wyeth's Pilgrims.
Anyone have particularly favorite Christ the King books?

Since you bumped this, Melinda, that reminds me. My sons really like picture books that we sing the song. Christmas, of course, has lots of those examples. And nursery rhymes. But I found a few versions of
Over the River and Through the Woods by Lydia Maria Child, illustrated by Christopher Manson (I love his woodcuts -- we have Good King Wenceslas illustrated by him, too).
and this one
illustrated by Brinton Turkle. I couldn't find a link to a paperback version, which is what I found. This one is OOP.

I found a particularly interesting take on Thanksgiving in The Thanksgiving Door.
BTW, I love Brinton Turkle's illustrations! The Obadiah books are some of my faves!

Time to bump up this thread!
We recently read The Pilgrims and Me (A Smart about History book)
A modern day young girl visits Plymouth Plantation and tells about her trip.
One of my favorite illustrators, MaryAnn Cocco Lefler does the illustrations.
It's fun and upbeat.... lots to look at in the pictures and full of interesting tidbits. My dc especially liked reading about the two brothers on the Mayflower who tried to make firecrackers to pass the time and almost blew up the ship. I can just see it....
We also enjoyed The Thanksgiving Door which was mentioned earlier in this thread. The potato doorstopper was a big hit here.

It's not exactly a Thanksgiving story, but it is a Pilgrim story, at least that's what the illustrator intends. I just discovered the Ashely Wolff version of Carol Ryrie Brink's Goody O'Grumpity. Written in 1937, this cute little story about a Pilgrim woman making a spice cake was originally a poem. The illustrations of the picture book version are woodcut style which I know I've mentioned before as a favorite of mine. Ashley Wolff is a favorite illustrator as well.

When I first decided to illustrate Carol Ryrie Brink's wonderful poem, Goody O'Grumpity, the first thing I needed to do was find out who Goody was. What did she look like? Where did she live? When did she live? My first clue came from her name. I knew that it was custom in early America to call a married woman "goodwife", so perhaps Goody was a shortened term of endearment. I also suspected that the specific ingredients for Goody's cake mentioned in the text might be from an actual recipe.
My hunches were confirmed during a visit to Plymouth Plantation, in Plymouth =, Massachusetts. I want to think the staff at Plymouth for their help in my research, particularly Kathleen Curtin, the foodways manager, who supplied the seventeenth century spice cake recipe used as the basis of the recipe at the end of this book.
Although I can't be certain of Carol Ryrie Brink's intentions, I'd like to think she would be happy with my version of Goody as a strong Pilgrim woman. |

This is a great one- especially if you have boys. It follows Tad Lincoln's exploits at the White House and touches on the Civil War, the first Thanksgiving and Abe Lincoln's character. There are two acts of kindness and a little suspense: can Tad save Jack, the White House turkey?

I just pulled out of our shelves some that are mentioned and very much loved including Sometimes Its Turkey Sometimes Its Feathers by Lorna Balian. My little ones like this one  .
I can't wait to check out some of the other titles mentioned (like always you ladies are a great resource) .

There is a new picture book on Sarah Hale that just came out this fall.
Sarah Gives Thanks: How Thanksgiving Became a National Holiday by Mike Allegra
Has a bit of the "woman are oppressed because they can only be mothers and housewives" tone unfortunately because otherwise it is an interesting story. I need to go back and compare it to the other Sarah Hale picture book listed above as it's been awhile since I read it.
