Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

July is the month of Carmel, or it should be. The Carmelite order enjoys many feast in July including the Solemnity of Our Lady of Mount Carmel on July 16th. In celebration of this, we are looking to the anonymous artists of Carmel.

Much in the same way that they say the Amish make wonderful quilts because of the plainness of their surroundings. The Carmelite is too surrounded by a austerity that is virtually unmatched, but leaves the heart to contemplate the beauty of Heaven. Artistic abilities are valued in Carmel, and at least with the Discalced Carmelite sisters they are encouraged to expand and develop their talents.

I read and found some neat things on the internet one article being found on a lady's blog Blog by the Sea-A Museum of Carmelite Art and Architecture in which she has a link to the Carmelite Museum in Andelusia, Spain. I found many pieces of anonymous art by Carmelite artists. You can start the virtual tour Start Here
She also has a wonderful article to read entitled
Art, Detachment, and the Beauty of God

The Carmelite feasts of this month include:
13 [Carmelite] St Teresa of Jesus of 'Los Andes', virgin
14
15
16 [Carmelite][SOLEMNITY] OUR LADY OF MT CARMEL
17 [Carmelite] B. Teresa of St Augustine & companions, virgins & martyrs
18
19
20 [Carmelite][Feast] ST ELIJAH, PROPHET
21
22
23 [Carmelite] Our Lady, Mother of Divine Grace
24 [Carmelite][Optional] B. Maria Pilar, et al, virgins & martyrs
25
26
27 [Carmelite][Optional] B. Titus Brandsma, priest & martyr
28 [Carmelite][Optional] B. John Soreth, priest

You can find much more art and a bit about each Carmelite saint here , this gallery found here contains just pictures of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

The Feast of July 17th, is the feast of Bl Teresa of St Augustine and companions, they are the Martyrs of Compiegne. A good book to celebrate this day would be _A Song At The Scaffold_ by Gertrude von le Fort,
Lepanto Press, for older children.

I think that the life of the Carmelite is a work of art, something beautiful for God. You could also celebrate by watching the wonderfully moving EWTN miniseries about the life of St Teresa of the Andes (Juanita Solar) "Teresa de Los Andes" begins on July 7th on EWTN See schedule here .

Bl Maria Pilar, Teresa and Maria Angeles
Feast Day is July 24th

Maria Pilar of St. Francis Borgia (born at Tarazona on December 30, 1877), Teresa of the Child Jesus and of St. John of the Cross (born at Mochales on March 5, 1909), and Maria Angeles of St. Joseph (born at Getafe on March 6, 1905), Discalced Carmelite nuns of the Monastery of Guadalajara, Spain, were martyred on July 24, 1936, after having given witness to their faith in Christ the King and offered their lives for the Church. The first fruits of the countless martyrs of the Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939, they were beatified by John Paul II on March 29, 1987.

St Elias
Feast Day July 20th

The prophet Elijah appears in Scripture as a man of God who lived always in his presence and fought zealously for the worship of the one true God. He defended God's law in a solemn contest on Mount Carmel, and afterwards was given on Mount Horeb an intimate experience of the living God. The inspiration that was found in him from the very beginnings of the Order so pervades its whole history that the prophet may deservedly be called the founder of the Carmelite ideal.

I found this on ebay once, it is a Ste Therese Diorama. Which I thought might be neat to adapt and use for art this month with children...

Please, please feel free to add to this study, what Carmelite books have you enjoyed with your children? And have you any wonderful Carmelite crafts you'd like to share?

Rebecca, I just wanted to thank you for sharing these wonderful resources with all of us. Our dd2 is named Maria Carmela, and celebrates her Name Day on July 16. This will be a great addition to celebrating her feast day!

Rebecca--Do you know about the celbrations for the Divino Nino in Latin countries? We were privileged to attend one of these at friends homes in both Mexico and Costa Rica. I was simply mesmerized by this devotion and celebration and have always wanted to do it in my home.

Dear Colleen,

I spent some time in a Discalced Carmelite Monastery before getting married, and they had a wonderful devotion to the Infant Jesus.

Thanks for the feedback ladies!
