Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

October 19th is the feast day of St. Anthony Daniel, one of the Canadian Jesuit martyrs. Anyone have Great Ideas for ways to celebrate that feast day in a special way? This is my son's feast day, and I've never really gone creative beyond a cake. And feting St. Anthony Daniel so often gets lost in the shadow of the great St. Isaac Jogues. So, any input is welcome

Thanks, Kelly in FL

Oops, I forgot to mention that St. Anthony Daniel is my son, Daniel's, patron saint.

Who was it that wrote they should never post when they're tired! Good advice for me, too.

This is a pertinent feast for our family this year as well - when my son, Jake, was confirmed this spring he chose another of the North American martyrs, St. Charles Garnier, as his saint's name.   I was a little confused though as a book we have, Saints of North America list's Garnier's feast day and several of the others including Antoine Daniel as September 26. I found in reading several sites that they are listed differently in different places. It looks like one is the US feast day (Oct. 19) and the other is the Canadian.

This North American martyrs' link has a nice picture of the martyrs as well as information about each of the martyrs and also a Jesuit novena prayer to the martyrs.

I think focusing on the Huron culture might be an interesting feast day activity. Learning some Huron words - Antoine Daniel sounds like he was very good at the language and translations. Also eating some common native foods would be fun.

I also liked Catholic Culture's idea of contributing to the Indian missions.

Darn it! Lost my original post. Let's see...

I confess, I did not know much about St. Antoine (Anthony) Daniel. This was new information for me...and yet, his name is on all the listings for the feast day. Silly me!

On the missionary idea, find out what a Jesuit Missionary in those days would bring to a foreign mission...all their belongings in the world.

And in all the depictions of these missionary martyrs, they wear the black robes and carry a small crucifix. I don't know if that's just artistic, but the cross would be a neat thing to find or make and use for your decorations. Carrying around a crucifix isn't that comfortable...the kids should try to "pretend" to be missionaries, holding up the cross to teach. It's hard!

I have been trying to recall a book that vividly portrayed the agony of persecution and martyrdom of these saints. It's so fuzzy that I can't remember if it was Isaac or Jean de Brebeuf...but I'll figure it out.

Music for your celebration should include the Huron Carol, written in Huron language by Jean Brebeuf. Anthony Daniel took over for Father Brebeuf, so I'm sure this was sung by him, too. Here are some other good links about the carol:

Adoremus: First American Christmas Carol.

I have a really off-the-wall idea; it might be too crazy! I'm not sure Antoine Daniel had to do this. But in my reading I remember the punishment of running the gauntlet...I think it also talked about the large "sticks" on either side that would trap the missionaries' feet when running through. But I could never visualize or understand how it looked or felt like. How about the family make a mild form of a gauntlet to see how this would be very torturous? I'm thinking just simple two lines close to the "runner" -- make it hard for him to get through, tickling or grabbing (mildly, like London Bridge), yelling...

Then go through a second time, a more "saintly" gauntlet. Cheers, streamers, drums, party horns...you get the picture.

A little crazy, I know.

I also was thumbing through an Advent book and it had ideas of incorporating some Indian symbols with the Advent wreath. Now I know this isn't Advent, but that could be a discussion and decorations. The Church has always *baptized* the good parts of another culture. Would they have used some of the Indian symbols to teach the Faith? If you want specifics, I'll share what this book has.

Now this might be inaccurate...I don't know what tribes specifically had corn. But an idea: use Indian Corn as a decoration and food.

Traditional Indian Corn Soup

Savory Indian Corn Pudding
Serve candy corn as part of the dessert.

More corny ideas

Good ideas, all. I especially like the idea about St. Anthony and learning foreign words. My ds is not naturally gifted in languages, alas, so perhaps we could invoke the assistance of St. Antoine Daniel in this department!
