Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I do think it's nice to take two years for both First Communion and confirmation notebooks. We began Mary Beth's notebook in the fall of 2002, when she began her prep in the Atrium. I wanted a way to make the CGS presentations concrete so that she'd have a tangible remembrance of them (and also so that I could educate the relatives I knew would come to the First Communion ) I used a tape I'd heard on prep by Fr. Peffley and the outline of the CGS prep to come up with my plan.

The downside to this correlation with the classroom experience was that much of the CGS first penance preparation takes place in the five weeks directly preceding first Communion. For me, those five weeks held a troubled pregnancy and a miscarriage. It was a real challenge to finish the notebook. But finish we did.

With Stephen, his first year of prep overlapped Mary Beth's last year. I even presented some of those penance lessons at home before the classroom meditations, just to take the last minute pressure off. I integrated his study of the Mass with Alice's Easter vigil plans. Pulling his notebook together really seemed effortless, but I think that's because we had a pretty good idea of where we were going by then.

Confirmation was tricky. Michael's prep notebook is just pages and pages of narrations of a formidable reading list. It never occurred to me to make them into a keepsake, though he would have been a child suited to it. Christian doesn't like the whole "crafty" thing or doesn't have an affinity to it. His notebook is complete, but it's bare bones. It was a real reminder to me that--and the end of the day--it's really more about the process and not the product. And we do have to play to a child's strengths. I love the notebooks, but the whole point was the catechesis, not the pretty bound package on the table at the reception.

Ladies,

I just have to say a BIG THANKS for all this wonderful information you've shared here. I have spent my morning computer time copying-and-pasting all these wonderful ideas into a word doc that will be on my hard-drive and saved to a backup in case my computer goes kaplooy!

I'm going to do FHC with Thomas and Maggie next year while we're in Austria. This will be a wonderful way to wile away the days until they're actually able to partake of the Lord's Supper!

We'll add some Austrian specific pages -- pictures of the Baroque church where they'll receive their FHC, Saints and Shrines in Austria that we'll visit, etc.

I'm so excited! I've already ordered many of the books they'll need and with all these ideas, CHC AND Cay's wonderful suggestions in her Mosaic, they should really come out of tis with a great love and understanding of the First Confession and First Holy Communion!

THANKS for sharing folks.

I'd like to echo Mary's thanks above, for all the wonderful ideas, information and inspiration in this thread! I just printed the whole thing out ~ had a little help from little fingers so a few pages will need to be re-printed ~ and placed it in a binder, so I can read through it all later (hi-lighter in hand). Thank you, all!

If you have time, you might want to check Catholic Rubber Stamps for beautiful Catholic images to add to your son's book.

TradeMark Catholic Stationery is another gold mine of resources.

Believe it or not, large craft chain stores like Michael's and A.C. Moore usually have huge scrapbooking sections with many lovely First Communion images to add to your book. Here is an example of some wonderful additions to your notebook from Jolee's True Faith Collection.

Okay I have struck paydirt for the Catholic Stationery.

FYI Australians, Beth Burns a homeschooling mother sells these, she is located in Lismore NSW and can be contacted via Stationery Orders [stationery.orders@yahoo.com.au]. If you go to the above site you can see what she carries and it is the same price as the American cost All you pay extra is postage to your house. Any profits which Beth makes, which obvioulsy is little goes to support the Carmelite Sisters of Lismore.

As for the Rubber stamps it appears we don't have them here I have seen some Jolee stickers on ebay but of course not much of a selection.

That's great, Erin! If I had to choose one source from among the three, it would be the stationery. Their selection is beautiful and so uniquely Catholic.

Great detective work!

I know most of you have finished FHC Notebooks but today on myCatholic.com -- under Reflections from the Saints-- comes this quote from St. Isidore:

Confession heals, confession justifies, confession grants pardon of sin. All hope consists in confession. In confession there is a chance for mercy. Believe it firmly. Do not doubt, do not hesitate, never despair of the mercy of God. Hope and have confidence in confession.
    – St. Isidore of Seville

Wouldn't that make a great quote for copywork in the section on First Reconciliation?

FWIW....Another resource that we use for First Communion prep and I am figuring into our notebooks for next year is the First Communion coloring book from Our Father's House. It does have pictures to color, but it is more than a coloring book!! It is full of symbolism that makes going through this book a wonderful experience...First Commmunion color book

Thanks Meredith!

We have just started our notebook this week, based on idea's from this post and others I have collected off the internet.

A special thankyou to all my sisters in Christ here for your wonderful ideas, God bless you all

I wasn't raised in any faith and sometimes when I see what others are doing or have done I suddenly feel inadequate to pass on our beautiful faith. I just never would have thought to include some of the things mentioned, and I don't think my children would come up with such beautiful narrations because I haven't taught them narration very well yet.

But nevermind my insecurities, we will come up with a wonderful keepsake and Father will make sure I have instructed them sufficiently. I will trust that God will put all my children need to know at this moment in my hands.

I know too, that my children are unaware of my feelings of not been good enough, and will enjoy learning about our faith and remember it as special in spite of me. I have certainly gathered enough idea's from here for us to make great First Holy Communion notebooks, so I shall just have to toss out my feelings

And isn't it amazing what stickers can do to make a notebook special
