Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

While putting together the Artist Study for this month, I also thought it would be really interesting to have an art appreciation study of paintings that reflect each of the stations of the cross. So each day for 14 days I'll post a painting by a well-known artist that depicts that station. This way we will have a complete stations of the cross by Friday of Sorrows - last Friday of Lent, right before Palm Sunday.

THIRD STATION
Jesus Falls the First Time

The Procession to Calvary

Artist: BRUEGEL
Date: 1564

I will be including several artists we have studied in the Monthly Artist Studies. For anyone who studied Bruegel the Elder, have your children see if they can identify the artist of this painting by sight. It is an interesting rendition - Christ is central to the composition of the painting, yet is only a small part of the overall picture. It is very classic Bruegel - lots of activity of the common people going on throughout the painting. What kinds of activites are they engaged in?

FOURTH STATION
Jesus Meets His Mother

Christ Falling on the Way to Calvary

Artist: RAPHAEL
Date: 1516-17

Another artist we have studied on 4 Real in the past. Unfortunately, I couldn't get any images that were larger - I like the larger ones.

SIXTH STATION
Veronica Wipes the Face of Jesus

The Road to Calvary

Artist: RUBENS
Date: 1634-37

You may start to notice that many of the paintings depict several elements of the stations not in isolation- for instance this one has His mother, the women of Jerusalem, and Simon as well as Veronica. Also note in many of the paintings the two thieves are depicted following in the processsion.

His paintings seem very animated - the motion seems to flow. Rubens is often called Prince of Baroque painters. Gwen is going to be posting a 4 Real study of him for a future month.

EIGHTH STATION
Jesus Meets the Women of Jerusalem

The Carrying of the Cross

Artist: JACQUEMART
Date: 1409

I thought this one was interesting in that it includes the hanging Judas. Reminds me of the Passion movie, because even though we know this happened from the gospel accounts I hadn't really seen it depicted.
