Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I so wanted to post this book last week before George's birthday but I was still waiting for it from the library. I had seen it but not had a chance to read it. When I did it met my expectations!

It is a fantastic book to add to the ones that were suggested earlier. While most remember George Washington best as a brilliant military general and 1st president of the United States, he was first and foremost a gentleman farmer which is how he is portrayed here.

The book is full of quotes from his diaries and letters reflecting on various aspects of the farm. They are cleverly inserted into the text yet seem part of the illustrations and add to the authentic and historic feel of the book. The paintings that grace the pages really bring the story alive in their richness and detail. My children recognized so many of the places we had visited and learned about during our visit.

End notes include a time-line of George’s life, a brief narrative about his work at Mount Vernon, his thoughts on slavery, and a resource list for more information on his life and work as a farmer.

Oh, and if you can't make it to Mount Vernon in person, your reading of the book would be enhanced by a virtual visit to the estate - Mount Vernon Estate & Gardens.

Looks so great, Mary. I can't wait to see it.
Sadly, my library doesn't have it...for now anyway.
