Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi, newbie here!

I would love to get some ideas from you all on how to turn our tiny, urban DC backyard into a kid-friendly, Charlotte Mason-approved habitat of nature study wonderment! It's fairly shaded and chopped up by stairs, a shed and a carport.

On the list thus far:

bird bath (though I hear mosquitos are a problem)
bird (and squirrel) feeder
ground cover (suggestions?)
container garden
sandbox? (Do these end up being large cat toilets?)
table and chairs
slate tiles (the hubby really wants these)
rain barrel

Thanks for you thoughts,
melanie

Welcome Melanie! Here's my quick backyard top 10.

The sandbox should be kept covered .

Wow...thanks MacBeth. That is a great list. Now I just to wait for the cold weather to come to a close (though we saw a great woodpecker on our tree today- one of few animals we see when it is that cold).

MacBeth! Those are wonderful suggestions -- and as some folks know I'm very nature/science challenged, but maybe even I could use this list!

THANKS!

What a great list!! Once we move to the new house we will have acres to explore. You had some great ideas MacBeth that I wouldn't have thought of.

Any chance of getting Macbeth's 'Backyard Top 10' link fixed? I know it is old but it sounds interesting

I'm not sure about fixing the link.. it may be gone. But JennGM posted this link over on facebook and I thought it fit here well.

Macbeth's list

I just searched her website and found the above list. Was this the original link?

ETA: ok, the link doesn't work. But if you go to MacBeths Opinion blog via google you will find on the left side bar a list. Click on Backyard nature. The post is from March 18, 2010. It is worth the effort.
