Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have some purple asters or Michaelmas daisies growing in my yard. Are you supposed to replant each year? They are coming out just for the feast day, which is exciting. But the plants are tall and leggy, not too pretty.

They'll be back, all by themselves. And they'll bring their children.

We had a vigil celebration tonight. My favorite part was the centerpiece that Thomas and Anthony made of Legos. Each made 3 archangels and Satan.

Thomas also brought a large Lego plate with bodies without heads to decorate the table. One body was higher and on some white bricks. What in the world? Heaven of course! No one needs legs or a head in heaven since we are spirits. God was the spirit on the white bricks.

Anyway, they spent the whole day on that activity. Too bad my camera batteries are dead.

I know it's past, but I just saw this post from Dumb Ox Academy that includes a recipe for Blackberry Balsamic Chicken from Saving Dinner. What a perfect recipe to incorporate blackberries for the feast of the Archangels?

Reviving the Feast of the Archangel thread.

We are planning a Feast Day party here for our homeschool group.

We are also going to play some games. I'm trying to think of one that would tie into each of the three archangels above. So for Gabriel I think we'll do the "Messenger Game" - which would be a version of the telephone or rumor game. For Raphael I was thinking something associated with "blind" like Blind Man's Bluff or "Pin the ___ on the ___ (wing/ angel?) Anyone one have any other "blind" game ideas.

I also need something for St. Michael. I'm thinking swords or something, but what kind of game could that be that won't be too wild and end up in sword play?? Or maybe a "spiritual warfare" game???? Any brainstorming thoughts would be appreciated.

This is so funny. I came here looking for ideas for games for our upcoming homeschool group celebration. I remembered the thread and was going to add my question to it, but I see I asked the questions before and also had some ideas (that I didn't remember ). So any more ideas? I actually think I'm going to be brave and try a game with a sword - one of those soft foam ones. It would be a version of freeze tag. The devil would "freeze" you (well that seems a little backward - I guess he would really "fry" you). Then the St. Michael would have to free you by touching you with the sword. How does that sound?

My son also thought of a throwing bean bags game to knock over the devil. We could have a propped up picture of the devil and throw bean bags at that. I was even thinking they could be "blackberry" bean bags.

We did these one year for a smaller group - Tin Punch Angels for the Guardian Angels feast day. Could be done for Archangels feast day, too, but not sure if I want to tackle it with a large group. Any new craft ideas that are really simple? Might do Ana H-B's popsicle stick angels.

Anyone else planning anything for the feast day?

I have several ideas rounded up on Catholic Icing.

Angel Craft Ideas on Catholic Icing

You'll find a lot of coloring pages, food ideas, crafts, etc. We've been working on some other angel crafts around here, too. Hope I have time to post them soon!

I ordered these wooden St. Michael rosary holder kits for the boys to make on Michaelmas this year, which is a perfect lead in to our rosary project we're starting Oct. 1.

I love all these ideas and links! My 4 year old has a particular devotion to St. Michael and even memorized the prayer on his own recently to say before Mass (his idea). Really, what 4 year old boy doesn't have soft spot for anything that carries a fiery sword and fights evil? St. Michael is like the ultimate superhero!

And I thought I'd share this picture with you.

This is a new statue at our archdiocese center. It is really cool - one the boys in our group are going to love. We are going to gather there to pray the St. Michael prayer before our celebration of the archangels.

~Strike the Devil (Knock over devil picture on tin cans w/"blackberry" beanbags)

Games (younger students):
~Pin the Sword on St. Michael
~St. Gabriel's Drop the Lily ("drop the hankie" game variation)
~St. Raphael's fish pond (carnival game where you "fish" for a prize)

we are going to have chicken wings and for dessert we are having black licorce, My son does not care for black raspberries so its something black. I think of us helping St. Michael smacking down the devil by sinking our teeth into the black licorce - yum!

Sing Bible Prayer Songs, a cd by Carol Fisher, has a great song called
"History, Mystery, Majesty" which is a sung version of the Chaplet of St. Michael.   It has a catchy refrain, and the prayer is beautifully and reverently sung.   It's a great addition to Michaelmas celebration

Also, it has a great song for St. Joseph, plus the song for the Apostle's Creed is wonderful. Oh, and the Hail Mary song... love how the name of Jesus is whispered. Hmm... come to think of it, this is just one of the best cd purchases I have made in a long time.

It would be an awesome gift for First Communion prep.

Oh, goodness, yes! That's actually what I'm doing at this very moment - scouring Catholic internet sites trying to get inspired! Would love to change things up a bit. I've personally graduated from coloring pages (though my girls still adore them!)

Chris, did you read through the older posts again? - I have our games and activities listed above. There are several original ideas there - we've been doing them for a couple years now and hope to change it up a bit, but probably will end up doing the same as I already have the materials.

So here are some pictures of a few of our games and crafts in case it helps.

CRAFTS & ACTIVITIES

St. Michael prayer card with tissue paper Michaelmas daisy

Craft angels made from nature materials (pine cones, "wing" seeds, acorns, leaves, dried grass, etc.)

Hershey Kiss angels (I posted instructions on my blog)

Name the Archangel activity - facts about archangel are listed and kids have to figure out who they are and stamp the picture above. I have rubber stamps of the archangels - but you could just print out pictures to glue or tape on. I have the template for the activity.

GAMES

Drop the Lily - like drop the hanky except you use a silk lily instead (Symbol of St. Gabriel)

Pin the sword on St. Michael

St. Raphael Fish pond - they get a small prize on the end of their line when they drop it over.

Blackberry toss - cans with devil faces on them are stacked up and you throw bean bags (blackberries) at them.

Guess the number of fish crackers in the jar

I have been trying to figure out something to do while we are walking from the building out to the St. Michael statue, to try to keep everyone focused and not running. I think I'm going to have us stay together and say one of these litanies I just found. They are so cool - and powerful sounding...

Litanies of St. Michael the Archangel

Lord, have mercy on us.
Christ, have mercy on us.

Lord, have mercy on us. Christ, hear us.
Christ, graciously hear us.

God the Father of Heaven,
Have mercy on us.

God the Son, Redeemer of the world,
Have mercy on us.

God the Holy Spirit,
Have mercy on us.

Holy Trinity, One God,
Have mercy on us.

Holy Mary, Queen of the Angels, pray for us.
St. Michael the Archangel, pray for us.
Most glorious attendant of the Triune Divinity,
(*Pray for us is repeated after each invocation)
Standing at the right of the Altar of Incense,
Ambassador of Paradise,
Glorious Prince of the heavenly armies,
Leader of the angelic hosts,
Warrior who thrust Satan into Hell,
Defender against the wickedness and snares of the devil,
Standard-bearer of Godís armies,
Defender of divine glory,
First defender of the Kingship of Christ,
Strength of God,
Invincible prince and warrior,
Angel of peace,
Guardian of the Christian Faith,
Guardian of the Legion of St. Michael,
Champion of Godís people,
Champion of the Legion of St. Michael,
Guardian angel of the Eucharist,
Defender of the Church,
Defender of the Legion of St. Michael,
Protector of the Sovereign Pontiff,
Protector of the Legion of St. Michael,
Angel of Catholic Action,
Powerful intercessor of Christians,
Bravest defender of those who hope in God,
Guardian of our souls and bodies,
Healer of the sick,
Help of those in their agony,
Consoler of the souls in Purgatory,
Godís messenger for the souls of the just,
Terror of the evil spirits,
Victorious in battle against evil,
Guardian and Patron of the Universal Church

Lamb of God, Who takes away the sins of the world,
Spare us, O Lord.

Lamb of God, Who takes away the sins of the world,
Graciously hear us, O Lord.

Lamb of God, Who takes away the sins of the world,
Have mercy on us.

Pray for us, O glorious St. Michael,
That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let Us Pray

Sanctify us, we beseech Thee, O Lord, with Thy holy blessing, and grant us, by the intercession of St. Michael, that wisdom which teaches us to lay up treasures in Heaven by exchanging the goods of this world for those of eternity, Thou Who lives and reigns, world without end. Amen.

Relying, O Lord, upon the intercession of Thy blessed Archangel Michael, we humbly beg of Thee, that the Holy Eucharist in whose presence we kneel, may make our soul holy and pleasing to Thee. Through Christ Our Lord. R. Amen.
