Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

OK wise ladies. What wonderful ideas do you have up your collective sleeves to celebrate the Feast of St. Michael, Gabriel and Raphael??? Last year, someone mentioned serving angel hair pasta. I thought this was brilliant. Any other great ideas?

Angel Food Cake of course (with chocolate frosting, otherwise what's the point ?)

Since I have 3 little ones, I was thinking of dressing them up as the Angels for when big brother and Dad get home -- do a little play about each one.....

Still room for other ideas -- anyone?

Elizabeth posted on CCM last year that Devil's Food Cake was the dessert for this feast in her house...and saves the Angel Food for Guardian Angels. I really liked that idea.

Michaelmas is such a traditional feast in Europe...this is one those harvest festivals (in some places Thanksgiving) and Quarter Days where banks and farmers and businesses refer to this day not by date but feast name "Michaelmas". I just love that!

In The Catholic Home by Meredith Gould she mentions that carrots play a prominent role in Scotland on this feast. As Raphael is the patron of eyesight, eating carrots would be a good thing in his eyes!

I also enjoyed the Michaelmas entry in A Book of Feasts and Seasons by Joanna Bogle. You get a true British feel for the day. But most of her ideas are on these web pages.

One thing you could do for this feast is find the architecture and places named after these archangels, particularly Michael. Two in particular: Michael's Mount in Cornwall and Mont St. Michel in France. I easily found pictures on the internet of both.

So here are some standby links:

Wilson's Almanac for Michaelmas

Catholic Culture, Feast of the Archangels. There are MANY traditional Michaelmas and harvest recipes on this page, see left hand column. I also like the deviled food ideas...my family LOVES deviled eggs! But then there's always the roast goose to try on this feast, if you don't do it on Martinmas!

Domestic Church, Celebrating the Feast of the Archangels
Profile on the Archangels
Exploring Angels
Angels to Color
St. Michael Cross Stitch Pattern
Crossword Puzzle

Women for Faith and Family.

Patron Saints Index

Foods of the Post=Pentecost Season includes a little tidbit about a special wine consumed on St. Michael's Day called "Saint Michael's Love" (Michelsminne). This page explains the traditional feast.

I thought this link was interesting:
Amish Bulletin on Michaelmas

On both Catholic Culture and Women for Faith and Family there is the references in the Catechism and Directory on Popular Piety. These are important to read and understand our devotion to the angels as a doctrine of the faith. And devils.

Which leads me to a discussion I had with dh last night. At what age do you discuss "The Devil" with your children? We have that lovely book My Jesus and I by Bishop Morrow. Ds (almost 2) loves the pictures. I've tried to kind of skip the devil pictures, but he asks. Dh is afraid this is too young an age to introduce something like that. I'd love to hear input here. I grew up with phrases like "Don't listen to the devil, he doesn't love God. Listen to your guardian Angel, because he loves Jesus and wants you to do good." Is that harmful for young ones?

Of course, I always overdo it, but a few more things to pass on:

Saint of the Day

Test Your Knowledge on Angels. Interesting!

And in the CCM archives, there was a great suggestion to search AllRecipes.com for the word angel and you will get TONS of recipes for the feasts of the archangels and the guardian angels, too!

Jenn,
The Catholic Source book mentions the legend of the blackberries; I think it is in Bogle's book as well. This is that the devil spat on all the blackberries on St. Michael's feast day and this is why they go bad after Sept. 29. I absolutely love this little story and we eat some type of berries on Sept. 29th., usually over Angel Food cake . Another idea would be to eat Devils food on 9/29 and Angel's food on 10/2, the feast of the Guardian Angels. Hope you're not on a diet

Yes, love the blackberry story. That's included in some of these links, too. The blackberry is really my personal favorite berry, so any excuse to serve it to everyone else I wish we had wild bushes to pick them around here. Dh grew up with a hillside across the street full of the bushes...and now there's a house there.

I keep finding references to the Michaelmas Daisy or purple aster. Here's another site. They would make the nice table decoration. But I'm wondering how many of you have actually seen these growing roadside? Are they that common in US? Anyone know of a source that I can plant them in my garden?

I found this South African perspective on Michaelmas. It talks about ginger being a big part of this celebration. But I really liked the conclusion:
But why celebrate Michaelmas? I quote: “The ultimate message still stands to remind us of the age-old battle between good and evil, and to ask us on which side we stand.”

Here's an Irish Perspective.

I'm wondering if Michaelmas is mostly European tradition, or do Hispanic cultures in Mexico, South America etc. have some unique traditions on this day?

Bear with me...a few more ideas. On the subject of daisies...a dessert one could make is a yellow sponge cake called "Margherita", the Italian word for daisy. Here's a recipe.

How about this name...for a girl born in September, Mariarcangela named for the Nativity of the BVM and the feast of the Archangels!?!

Ann Ball ties in the herbs angelica and eyebright for this feast.

I'll stop now!!!!

Our next door neighbor has tons of blackberries. We're going to trade some of our hot peppers and zucchinis for some later this month (although I think the blackberries are the better part).

OK, I'm printing the entire post here...I can't beleive I missed this one until today

WE have the purple daisy or Asters growing in our yard, they are very prevalent here in Idaho. We're a high mountain desert clime, with lost of prairie sprinkled around so they do very well!!

Jenn, you really should write a book, you are just a wealth of knowledge and research for us, thank you so much

I think I'll do crock pot wings, teriyaki or something and then the devils food cake with chocolate frosting and blackberries. We'll all have to go read the weight watchers thread after this feast I'm afraid

Thanks again for all the gret ideas. Happy feasting! (Where's the spoon and fork emoticon??)

These are all great ideas--thanks very much!

One year, on the Feast of the Archangels, I taught the children in our Catholic girls group about the nine choirs of angels and let them create St. Michael Chaplets. Each of the girls was given nine separate colors of pony beads, to represent the nine separate angel choirs. These they strung along with a St. Michael medal at the end.   Here is the beautiful chaplet prayer, copied from EWTN's website:

________________

The Chaplet of St. Michael the Archangel

The Chaplet of St. Michael is a wonderful way to honor this great
Archangel along with the other nine Choirs of Angels. What do we
mean by Choirs? It seems that God has created various orders of
Angels. Sacred Scripture distinguishes nine such groupings:
Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones, Dominions, Powers, Virtues,
Principalities, Archangels and Angels (Isa. 6:2; Gen. 3:24; Col.
1:6; Eph. 1:21; Rom. 8:38). There may be more groupings but these
are the only ones that have been revealed to us. The Seraphim is
believed to be the highest Choir, the most intimately united to God,
while the Angelic Choir is the lowest.

The history of this Chaplet goes back to a devout Servant of God,
Antonia d'Astonac, who had a vision of St. Michael. He told Antonia
to honor him by nine salutations to the nine Choirs of Angels. St.
Michael promised that whoever would practice this devotion in his
honor would have, when approaching Holy Communion, an escort of nine angels chosen from each of the nine Choirs. In addition, for those
who would recite the Chaplet daily, he promised his continual
assistance and that of all the holy angels during life.

The Chaplet of St. Michael

O God, come to my assistance. O Lord, make haste to help me. Glory be
to the Father, etc.

[Say one Our Father and three Hail Marys after each of the following
nine salutations in honor of the nine Choirs of Angels]

1. By the intercession of St. Michael and the celestial Choir of
Seraphim may the Lord make us worthy to burn with the fire of
perfect charity. Amen.

2. By the intercession of St. Michael and the celestial Choir of
Cherubim may the Lord grant us the grace to leave the ways of sin
and run in the paths of Christian perfection. Amen.

3. By the intercession of St. Michael and the celestial Choir of
Thrones may the Lord infuse into our hearts a true and sincere
spirit of humility. Amen.

4. By the intercession of St. Michael and the celestial Choir of
Dominions may the Lord give us grace to govern our senses and
overcome any unruly passions. Amen.

5. By the intercession of St. Michael and the celestial Choir of
Powers may the Lord protect our souls against the snares and
temptations of the devil. Amen.

6. By the intercession of St. Michael and the celestial Choir of
Virtues may the Lord preserve us from evil and falling into
temptation. Amen.

7. By the intercession of St. Michael and the celestial Choir of
Principalities may God fill our souls with a true spirit of
obedience. Amen.

8. By the intercession of St. Michael and the celestial Choir of
Archangels may the Lord give us perseverance in faith and in all
good works in order that we may attain the glory of Heaven. Amen.

9. By the intercession of St. Michael and the celestial Choir of
Angels may the Lord grant us to be protected by them in this mortal
life and conducted in the life to come to Heaven. Amen.

Say one Our Father in honor of each of the following leading Angels:
St. Michael, St. Gabriel, St. Raphael and our Guardian Angel.

Concluding prayers:

O glorious prince St. Michael, chief and commander of the
heavenly hosts, guardian of souls, vanquisher of rebel spirits,
servant in the house of the Divine King and our admirable conductor,
you who shine with excellence and superhuman virtue deliver us from
all evil, who turn to you with confidence and enable us by your
gracious protection to serve God more and more faithfully every day.

Pray for us, O glorious St. Michael, Prince of the Church of Jesus
Christ, that we may be made worthy of His promises.

Almighty and Everlasting God, Who, by a prodigy of goodness and a
merciful desire for the salvation of all men, has appointed the most
glorious Archangel St. Michael Prince of Your Church, make us
worthy, we ask You, to be delivered from all our enemies, that none
of them may harass us at the hour of death, but that we may be
conducted by him into Your Presence. This we ask through the merits
of Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen.

The girls were all extremely interested in learning about the separate choirs of angels, and the concept was new to many of them. After saying the Chaplet together, we all sang the beautiful hymn, "Ye Watchers and Ye Holy Ones," chosen because it mentions each of the nine choirs of angels by name.

Another year, we made a simple Archangel craft. I gave each girl one gold doily and three white ones along with some yarn and construction paper. They used these materials to make three angels glued to a gold background doily. At the bottom, they wrote: St. Michael, St. Raphael, St. Gabriel. I encouraged them to use the construction paper to create distinguishing symbols of the separate angels, so St. Michael was given a sword, St. Raphael a fish, and St. Gabriel a scroll.

One year, I purchased plain fabric puppet forms at the educational store and gave the children assorted yarn, gold thread, fabric and markers to create Archangel Puppets. Some of the girls made St. Michael, sword in hand. Others St. Raphael with the fish, but most made St. Gabriel, holding a scroll with the words "Ave Maria" and a lily of purity.

This year, we are having a huge Archangels party on September 29th and putting on a play called "Comus"--it is a fairy tale with the battle between good and evil as its central theme. A friend of ours wrote the play based on a picture book she loved, and many of the children in our homeschooling group will be participating. I also saved some old calendars with beautiful scrap art Victorian pictures of angels, so we will probably use them to create a craft of some sort.

All ye Angels and Archangels, pray for us!

Great craft ideas, Alice (and appreciated the Chaplet, too). The crafts reminded me of an angel craft we have done for Guardian Angels feast day. Angels made with Hershey's Kisses- yummy to eat later. (This page says to use the caramel filled kisses - we have always just used the regular chocolate - obviously it doesn't matter for the angel)

You're right, Jenn, we do devil's food on St. Michael's feast and Angel's food on October 2nd. Our dinner menu is all messed up though, because my Michael was born on September 29th and Patrick was born on October 2nd.We let the birthday boy choose the menu! I mi ght suggest wings, though and if either choose pasta (they often do), it's angel hair. Incidentally, Kirsten was born the 30th and it's the Feast of St. Therese on October 1st. We feast for four day's straight!

We have 3 "name days" on the 29th, Renee's 1st birthday on the feast of the Little Flower and our homeschool patrons are the Guardian Angels which means a school holiday (that'll be on Mon. instead of Sun.).

It's a huge blessing to have so much wonderful information from this thread to actually plan a few days in advance

After following this thread, I was at an Old World Festival in Manassas (of all places) which the local Orthodox Church had a table. Nativity of Our Lord Orthodox Church. I bought a wonderful miniature stained glass night-light depicting St. Michael. I've written to the church so I can get some more ordering information, because I REALLY like it. It's like one of those kits that you fill with plastic and put in the oven and it melts and makes a colored stained glass-like object. This one was unique becuase it has glitter as part of the coloring...so the wings are this very small gold glitter. It's quite beautiful. Ds loves it.

Angels on the Web has ALL sorts of graphics for the archangels, guardian angels from all genres, including Catholic and Orthodox.

That's another tangent, in studying icons, there are so many depictions of St. Michael.

Here is a link to the history of the play, a "masque" by Milton. Comus

Comus is wonderful (though the title character is not a "good guy"), and the kids are all working very hard on it. It takes about 15 minutes to perform (as long as the person hosting the performance does not have her sprinkler system turned on ).

We plan to video tape the performance, so if you ever visit us, you may be subjected to Comus.

This is the link to the picture book illustrated by Trina Schart Hyman:
Comus

Anyone interested in the script can contact me and I'll put you in touch with the author of our adaptation.

I love Michaelmas!
