My 14yo and 11yo dss so enjoyed reading aloud, The Limerick Gloves (from Great Irish Short Stories), that I came here searching for more short stories to enjoy together.

I really like "The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky" by Crane - very subtle - and "the Ambitious Guest" by Nathanial Hawthorne.

What about Mark Twain? I know he's done quite a few short stories but the one that comes to mind is "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County"

Jodie, before I read your post, guess which story I started to read? Yep, "The Notorious Jumping Frog of Claveras County." It's a fun tie-in to California Gold Rush, humor, tall tales, American lit, and other areas of interest with my boys.

Angie, I remember that story because... I lived in Calaveras county for a while when I was oh about 6th -8th grade.

I was going to suggest Kipling, but someone did already. His stories about the colonial life in India are good, along with his animal stories.
The first thought that came to my mind was Saki. Very short, very wicked, very funny.

We read the Red Chief that Theresa mentioned in the beginning the other day and all my kids loved it! So the next day they asked for another short story- I picked The Honest Theif by Dostoyevsky. It had them almost in tears. It was so moving. Thanks for the inspiration to get reading some short stories!

that is weird and takes away so much of the power of the story.
Of course in my head the story ends when the snow puts out the fire.
I'm not sure if that was just the way I remember it or if perhaps when I read it in 8th grade it was a shortened version that did end there.
But I do know that it was the power of the story.. the lack of being able to be saved.. that did keep it in my memory for all those years.

... but isn't it interesting to see the transformation of a story through the two versions? I didn't read either version as a youth, so I have no expectations .
Funny though, when I was finished reading the 1st version, my 14yo who is hot off of reading Call of the Wild said, "What? He didn't die? Everyone dies at the hands of London. Even squirrels die!" 
2nd version coming up...

I'm back for more ideas and thought you might enjoy this recent article Young people today have lost moral vocabulary. Bishop Chaput mentions "The Lottery."
"The Monkey's Paw" is a spooky read for Halloween.
Also wanted to share that the boys and I really enjoyed, A Village Singer by American, Mary E. Wilkins, 1891. I LOVED it and was pleased that the boys did too. Oh, those church ladies!

A Good Man is Hard to Find is a dark story recounting the murder of a family. It mingles the ideas of destiny, tragedy, and forgiveness into a story that is too grim for my tastes, but I generally am not a fan of O'Connor's stories. I'd say this is high school level just because of the subject matter. It would certainly lend itself to some interesting discussion, however.
Was The Misfits the basis for the Clark Gable movie of the same name?

I second Melinda's recommendation of "The Necklace" above. A great story that has always stuck with me and that illustrates the price of dishonesty and failure to admit one's own mistakes.
I also thought of "The Mansion" by O. Henry. Basically, it is like Dicken's "A Christmas Carol" in having as a main character a hard-edged businessman who learns that the best investment is to use his money to build an "everlasting" mansion, not one on this earth. Great Christian values in this story.
My last (middle-of-the-night) thought was the classic The Lady or the Tiger, a short story everyone should read! A true cliffhanger...I read it in 6th grade and will still, all these years later, sometimes wonder to myself...the lady or the tiger?
