Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We are trying to do an overview of world geography this year.
Brigid has chosen to start with Europe.
My goal is that she is more informed about the names and capitals of countries, major landforms, natural resources, perhaps native language spoken, and waterways.
This is a very broad beginning but I feel it could take off in many directions and could last an extra year too.
Does anyone have favorite picture book suggestions that focus on individual European countries or regions? We will pull the National Geographics off the shelf and do some drawing of maps but picture books are so much more fun, and we seem to learn more.
Thinking I would like to sit in the picture book section of the library and start a search for some good titles-not very effecient but what an interesting time.

One place to look for ideas is the Homeschool Share website of unit studies. This particular page lists titles by country in which it takes place. There are quite a few for European countries.

I'm currently doing a K-1 culture/geography class for our homeschool co-op. A couple European countries are planned and the books I have chosen for those countries are:

Ireland - Jamie O'Rourke and the Big Potato (Tomie dePaola)
Katie's Wish (Barbara Shook Hazen)- about the potato famine

Germany - Berlioz the Bear (Jan Brett)

Spain - The Story of Ferdinand (Munro Leaf)

Then there is Russia which is in both Europe and Asia. A couple picture books I particularly like are:
The Wolfhound (Kristine Franklin) - set in Tsarist Russia
Sasha's Matrioshka Dolls (Jana Dillon) - set in old Moscow
