Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

The Little Boy’s Christmas Gift
John Speirs

Epiphany nativity wise men baby Jesus Balthazar Melchior Caspar king star illuminated manuscript gift evergreen tree van Eyck Weyden Brueghel

I'm listing this book now as it is a great Epiphany read. The illustrations are gorgeous, reminiscent of painters of the 15th and 16th centuries, such as the altarpeiees of Jan van Eyck and Weyden, and The Life of the Virgin by Memling. They are gilded and include illuminated manuscript for the text side of the pages. The story is of a little boy who learns of the newborn king from the wise men and follows them even though he is told he has no grand gift to offer. Numerous other visitors join the wise men and bring their various gifts. In the end the boy presents his simple gift of a decorated evergreen tree which pleases the child very much. End notes include discussion of the history of the evergreen in association with Christmas (Middle Ages' mystery plays depicting Garden of Eden).

Mary, this is a fabulous book! The illustrations are simply beautiful! Thank you for reviewing it just in time for Epiphany.
