Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

This month's composer is Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, but I was thinking of interspersing the selections with lots of Advent music, etc. since there are so many great suggestions already on this forum and we haven't even begun to explore a lot of them. I hope this is okay

I'll be back later with links and ideas.

Meanwhile, if anyone could shed light on this, please do:

one of our favorite rounds is Dona Nobis Pacem, and we are hoping to learn it as a family so we can sing it at the Christmas party we're attending. I've seen several places where it is attributed to Palestrina, and several other places where they say otherwise. Anyone know?

Thank you!!!

Hey Stef!

Great choice for composer!

As for the Dona Nobis round, I understand that the round is traditional. I'd love to know if anyone knows for sure!

Glad you like it, Macbeth!

Here's what Catholic Encyclopedia has to say about him.

I tried to find a children's biography but couldn't -- if anyone has ideas, please post! Thanks!

Today we are listening to "Legends of St. Nicholas" (Anonymous 4).

But here are some suggestions for Palestrina:

Alma Redemptoris Mater

Missa Pro Defunctis and Missa Papae Marcelli -- there are several recordings, we haven't decided which one's our favorite.

O Magnum Mysterium, which you can sample here:

Sicut Cervus

Dona Nobis Pacem can be heard here:

though we really like the recording in the Lingua Angelica CD.

Lots of MIDI files here:
