We are studying a continent per half term with the main focus on the animals that are native to the continent.
We move to North America next. Any suggestions on stories that would suit. Eg there is a range of books here on turtles, koalas etc that are stories but include some facts on the animals. Story books would also be great.
DS is almost 7 and DD is 4 1/2.

This sounds like a really creative way to explore the continents. I'm very intriqued to help though am wondering if you are looking for native animals that are exclusive to North America or just ones that are native even if they are native to other continents as well? In Australia you guys have so many animals that aren't found anywhere else in the world which is so cool. We don't seem to have as many like that - and some that I associate with North America really have similar species on other continents to which they are connected (like South America or across the arctic into N. Europe and Asia/Russia) or were on other continents even if now extinct.
So I was thinking we could brainstorm major animals native to North America (includes US, Canada, Mexico, Central America) and that might make it easy for people to jump in with specific books they would recommend for those animals.
Native and generally exclusive to North America
Bison (buffalo)
Pronghorn (antelope)
Grizzly bear
Kodiak bear
Prairie dog
Bald eagle
Roadrunner
Quail (new world species)
Coyote
Bobcat (lynx)
Mountain goat
Bighorn sheep & Dall sheep
Raccoons, coati, & ringtails
Then there are mix of other species that are exclusive to North America but have similar/close species on other continents or are most prolific in North America though in small areas of other continents (usually South America or Russia/Asia because of land connections) like:
American beaver
American black bear
Moose (also Russia)
Elk (wapiti) (also Europe and Russia)
Rattlesnake (also South America)
Skunk (also South America, Philippines, Indonesia)
Armadillo (also South America)
Cougar (Mountain lion, puma, panther, catamount)(also South America)
The Jim Arnosky books are great. Some are more storybooks, others more factual info about habitat/characteristics. A couple that would be specific to North American Animals are:
Under the Wild Western Sky
Grandfather Buffalo
Coyote Raid in Cactus Canyon
All About Rattlesnakes
Armadillo's Orange
So who has specific recommendations for books?

Antelope, Bison, Cougar is an ABC book that covers native (and many are exclusive) North American animals who live in our National Parks. Beautiful and informative book.

Well, we'll have to do beavers. For some reason they totally facinate DS. Thanks for the list of native animals - that helps :) We have recently seen a cougar up close at a theme park so maybe we'll do that one too.
Our library has one of the Arnosky books on bears. I might add one that you listed to our Amazon order. The ABC book sounds great too.
We have had fun with this. We will end up with a file of animals `sorted' by continent. I made up about 5 `forms' and he chooses one for most of the animals. They might have a life cycle wheel or `food chain' or other animals that live in this habitat or description etc. Sometimes we just glue pictures onto a page. His copywork has sometimes been animal names so this is in there too. We also measure the lengths of animals with wool and put them in. He's not doing a lot of writing yet. Some animals don't end up in there at all!!

I love the Arnosky books too and the audubon books of birds & animals of north amercica . My sil also gave me a deck of cards of all the audobon animals of NA . we keep them in the car to look at while on our trips around the province .
I also like the kids can press books for kids .They've got some really nice ones for younger children like the life of a frog the life of a butterfly the life of a seed . then for a little older like your ds age by pamela hicks about animal sences what animals eat . there are many titles to choose from . we also like the books they do on Canadian history you can go to thier website they have one for the US & Canada .

Gail Gibbons also has an engaging series of books on wildlife. Ones that would cover specifically North American animals are:

Some more picture books-
Old Mother Bear - Tender story of an old Grizzly mother with her last set of cubs. Very informative.
Old Coyote - story of an aging coyote at the end of his life
Coyote and Badger - interesting tale of how coyotes and badgers sometimes help each other to hunt. Sad element as a badger mom loses one of her babies to an eagle.
Roadrunner's Dance - a creation story told as a Native American tale though it is modern and not a traditional tale
I'm enjoying finding books that fit this topic and I'll keep adding them as I'm reading them.

Stef, that Swimmer book looks really good. I like ones about salmon  . Reminds me of another I found this year - it's older and OOP, but good for younger crowd.
