Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Here is the Artist Study for this month that Mary M put together. This looks wonderful too! Thanks, Mary, for preparing it. I look forward to using it this month.

Today is the birthday of Frederic Remington - American painter, famous for his depictions of Western life. Since we focused on Degas this summer, an artist who has particular appeal to the girls, I thought it would be fun this month to look at an artist whose primary subjects were cowboys, Native Americans, and soldiers for the boy factor.

Here is some biographical info on Frederic Remington.

The Cavalry Charge

The Stampede

The Scout: Friends or Foes?

Coming and Going of the Pony Express

Like Degas, in addition to his paintings, Remington was a gifted sculptor and is in fact quite well known for them. This is the most famous of his bronzes.

I realize with this going up during the time when the forum was closed early in the month, I didn't get back to it with more ideas for the monthly study. So here are some links. If anyone else has anything to add, please do!

Mike Venezia's Frederic Remington

Children's study of The Smoke Signal painting.

Remington painted a large number of night scenes which are beautiful - very dramatic with the starkness of contrast with lighting and color. There is a book which specifically looks at these paintings - The Color of Night. You can view some of the nocturnal paintings here and here. The first link also contains a nice background section on Remington.

Thanks, Mary!

The kids and I enjoyed many of Remington's works on our Star Spangled Adventure this summer.

He is a favorite here!

I seem to remember seeing Remington's works at the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, OK - if anyone is close enough that would make a great field trip!

They have 18 of his 22 bronzes.
