Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

One year when we were teenagers, my dad let us stay up really late and we did an hours worth of work out in the garden in the dark under the moon, even if it was just putting things away, etc....because by that time, most of the veggies were in. Then we went for a long walk.

We came in and had Apple Cider, corn on the cob and caramel corn. It was REALLY FUN!

We went to school late the next day and the note he wrote actually said, "Suzanne is late this morning because we worked late under the Harvest Moon last night."

Forgot to add: We are staying up late too......we'll have to go for a drive to see it early, as our trees are so tall around our house. Can't wait! Hope it's not cloudy!

As the 3-year-old says, "We wuv da moon!"

What a cool dad! That sounds like a really neat experience.

This is a fun activity to do whenever there is a full moon - but the harvest moon always seems particularly large when it rises so would be perfect for this activity to illustrate the illusion of moon size.

The Ponzo Illusion and the Moon

And how about moon themed foods for a treat - lots of round (gold or white foods) like cookies, crackers, cheese, biscuits, mooncakes, etc...

We'll be observing the tide as well as the moon, it is exceptionally high on the Harvest Moon and is called a Spring Tide (like springing up out of a chair, not like the season). For reasons behind that I think Astroprof's Tidal page is fairly clear and easier to read than some articles. It's a pretty fascinating phenomena and we'll be loosening the dock lines as the day goes on.

NOAA's Tide Lessons are pretty nice and are written for the upper grades.

Suzanne, I remember going for a crisp moonlit walk one harvest moon with my dad, we settled down in a pile of leaves on the edge of the woods and listened to owls calling. It was so amazing! But just to confuse our sense of the seasons down here, we now have these spring peeper sounding frogs going off at night. It must be due to all this rain we've been having but sounds so odd.

thanks everyone for your ideas & suggestions...we went to a local hill top. & gazed...but it was too dark to paint! LOL! So, on the way home, I told E to keep a picture of the moon in her mind...& we painted this morning. She was tired, though, so plan to do more moon themed ideas next week (off to the zoo tomorrow)

Thanks for bumping, Suzanne. I see Maryan already was thinking the same thoughts as me:

When I saw the title, I started humming it. I love that song.

And, I put a couple books on hold at the library from perusing the results of this search:

Books about Harvest Moon

There are some I haven't seen.

By the Light of the Harvest Moon
