Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

For October, I've decided that I would like to spend the whole month talking and learning about the Angels with my dc. Starting with the feast day of the Guardian Angels on the 2nd, I would like to read a few good picture books about angels each week...

So- what are the best angel books out there? Any recommendations? I have "The Christmas Angels" by TdP- we love that one!

Tomie dePaola also has Angels, Angels Everywhere. Very few words, the pictures do the describing. Really brings the guardian angel to light.

There is an angel list in the upcoming Christmas Mosaic and Bright Christmas: An Angel Remembers by Andrew Clements/ Kate Kiesler is a featured book. It's peaceful and tranquil. Perfect bedtime read. And appropriate for ages 0-99.

Melinda, we love The Angel's Alphabet by Hilda Van Stockum. I'm not sure, but it may be out of print. Check your library to see if they have a copy of this treasure.

In addition to the others mentioned, Dav Pilkey's God Bless the Gargoyles is a sweet story about the guardian angels of the gargoyles on cathedrals. Obviously, it's a bit fantastical , but the theme of the book (that angels are everywhere, watching out for us all) is very true. The verses are well-written, and the illustrations (based on stained glass windows) are just lovely!

Oh, thanks for the recommendation. I see it was published by Bethlehem Books in 1996. There are quite a few used copies available around $6.00 for shipping, so I nabbed one.

I was also going to suggest for a read-aloud Marigold Hunt's Book of Angels. It's not a picture book.

While perusing publisher's sites today for their new fall publications, I saw that Eerdmans has this brand new book which sounds promising.

Angels Among Us

I generally really like what Eerdmans publishes so I hope this is good.

We have some of these, but I am thrilled to see some titles I haven't heard of. Thanks for these FABULOUS threads, Cay! Can't have enough Angel books! ;)

My little kids voted and their fave to be read aloud is the Tomie de Paola one on St. Pascual. But my absolute favorite is My Guardian Dear by Lademan/Brindle (Precious Life). Sometimes I think of the Angel "Gloriel" and have to remind myself that he was "made up"!!!!

I have to enthusiastically second this book - simply wonderful and I heard it is out of print, worth trying to track down a secondhand copy.

I happened upon this conversation more than a month after it occurred. Since my youngest dd was born on the Feast of the Guardian Angels, I knew this was a book I wanted for our collection. I went online to do a used book search and found that Jenn must have started a buying frenzy among the 4Realers with the post I've quoted above.

The used copies of The Angel's Alphabet were going for anywhere between $30 and $100! Then I hit the jackpot. I found one on Ebay listed at a lower price and won it for only $7.95 plus shipping! I think the seller just had no idea that she could have gotten a much higher price.

It arrived today, and I just love it. Incidentally, I am so pleased to find that it's in perfect like-new condition at that great price. Thank you so much for the recommendation. Although part of me wants to break it open with the children right away, I think I'm going to put it away for dd's 2nd Guardian Angel birthday next year.

Oh, my! I bought my used copy from Amazon for about $6 total... and that was about 6 weeks ago. Wow!

This is not exactly a picture book, but wanted to post it here, because it's so GREAT! Great Battle for Heaven

It's an activity book for the 5-9 yo crowd. But, I'm mentioning it here because the first 5 pages is a great read-aloud and captivating. About Lucifer and the battle for heaven, the Holy Angels, etc.

And, then the rest of it are activiites about angels, ST. Michael, etc.
