Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Looks like good viewing this year, with no moon!

The great thing about the Perseids is that they always occur during Clair and Libby's birthday, so there is no way to forget them!

Right! It makes a great party favor!

So, are you up for getting the kids up at 4 am and driving to the beach (north shore, this time?)?

Anyone else want to join us?

Definitely, the most memorable veiwing of the Perseid meteor shower that I have experienced is one time in a campground in Teton National Park. It was beautiful. All the best veiwings I remember are in that general area (eastern Oregon, southern Idaho, western Wyoming). What is most important to good viewing is lack of light pollution from large metropolitan areas. You should have no problem if the sky is clear. I'm so sad to live in the city now for that reason. We say we will go outside the city to get a better view but that doesn't generally happen. (And it's cloudy here tonight anyway )

A fun book to read to younger ones on this topic is Meteor by Patricia Polacco. Anyone else know of any good stories which feature meteors or "shooting stars"?

I really think it is cool that the Perseids have also been called the "Tears of Saint Lawrence", since the meteors seemed to be in abundance during his August 10th feast day. I never knew that until this year.

Of course! "Tears of Saint Lawrence"...I never made that connection! Years ago I saw an interesting Italian movie by Taviani called "Night of the Shooting Stars" ("Notte di San Lorenzo") which is about the memories of a young girl in her Tuscan town which is about to be occupied by Germans. It has beautiful footage of the falling stars of the Perseids---and I think a moving story. The only negative is that they make the village priest look guilty and conniving---which I'm sure could happen, I just get tired of having that stuff rammed down my throat by the film industry. That aside, it's an artsy, interesting movie, beautifully filmed (tho probably for parental viewing only...at the very least, parental pre-viewing!).

Well, we're all sleep-deprived and mosquito-bitten, but it was a worthy show, not spectacular, but definitely worth the 5:00 reveille We counted 50 in about 40 minutes. I told my children there were people all over the US, even in New York, outside doing the same thing as we were. They were shocked. I think they thought we were the only insane people...

We woke up at about 4:30 this morning, hauled our lounge chairs out, and laid back to pray the rosary (a very distracted one) while staring at the sky. In one hour we counted 28 compared to 11 last year. What was really amazing to us amateurs (this is only our second year) was the size and tails of some of the meteors. They were gigantic! They reminded me of when I saw Halley's comet some years back. Did anyone else notice this, or is it a common thing?

I noticed some really huge ones, too! It was like Fireworks in July.

As for numbers, I guess we were just spoiled from the Leonid meteor shower year before last, when we counted over a hundred in very short order. However, they weren't nearly as grandiose as some of the Big Boys we saw this morning.

One of my children kept saying he was afraid of tripods... (and no, we have not seen the movie or commercials for "War of the Worlds" Go figure!)

Ugh - fourth straight year that it's been fully overcast at 4 a.m. here. I remember the first year I watched them with Jacob in our backyard. It was such an intimate time with just the two of us. I loved the quiet and the fun of anticipating the next one.

We've been depressed every year looking forward to it and then disappointment. So glad you all got to see them!

Julie~~here's hoping November will be better.

We couldn't see a thing here either, but I let the children sit up with me in the dark to watch a formidable lightning storm. Nature's consolation prize!
