Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Music has been such a blessing during this special time of adding John Paul to our family. I've been thinking about the process by which we have grown a family music study and how we have come to organize it. This natural process combined with some flexible organization has helped us to make the most of our music.

The process itself has been fun. Over the years we have collected a wide variety of music, picking it up here and there and everywhere...at festivals, museums, concerts...in PA, CA, OH, NV, AZ... We exchange music with friends, purchase cheap stuff off the sale rack just because, and gorge ourselves on holiday music. We purchase recordings connected with our favorite musicals and other entertainment. We share stories from Dave and my youth via "oldies." We also augment our CDs with loans from the library. I feel that our collection adds up to a unique reflection of who we are as a family.

Owning many CDs, we want to make sure that we don't overlook any of our favorites so I came up with two monthly music grids that help keep us on track. For classical music study, we "specialize" and focus on 12 artists, three from each period (and one for each month.) Over the years, we review each artist and build on what we already know and appreciate. We do listen to other artists, in addition to our main artist, usually focusing on the same period. For our other music study, I chose 12 topics, and they easily landed under two broad catgories of American and World. These are usually connected to a holiday or other unit theme.

If someone had told me thirteen years ago that our haphazard approach to "listening to music our family happens upon and enjoys" would add up to something broad and comprehensive, I would have been reassured .

Love,

Thanks friends! Oh how I would love to swap CDs with you all...I can imagine an infinite number of topics/units out there among us.

We also plug our music into our weekly and daily routines. Sunday is for beautiful music (classical) and more contemporary Catholic/Christian music.) We play fun music on Saturdays and while cleaning (we've tried to listen to BOCs while doing chores but we are too easily distracted .) We have special family fun nights that includes music...dance night is hilarious. Hmmm...I haven't plugged any music into our swimming time...woo hoo, another unit to develop!

Love,

There was an old Dutch gentleman I used to work with in WDC, ex-WWII soldier and former POW, who told me that in his childhood in Holland, they always reserved Sunday for Opera Music. Copying his idea, we did this for a long time. It's amazing how much you can pack in with once-a-week listening. Thanks for reminding me of this---and re-inspiring me to get going again!!!
