Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I grew up in a protestant private school so memorizing scripture from the KJV was emphasized.

I was just wondering if anyone, as Cathlics, does this with their kids and if so, is there a specific Bible that you take the scripture verses from? We have The New American Bible, The Catholic Study Bible and the Catholic One Year Bible. The wording varies from Bible to Bible. TIA!!

I grew up memorizing from the KJV as well. "Classics" like Psalm 23 and John 3:16 just don't sound right in any other version!

I've found the Revised Standard Version to be very close to the KJV. We are using it now.

We've just started memorizing Scripture. I don't have a plan for that, yet. I'll be looking for ideas!

This sparked my interest. Here is a website on a Scripture Memory system.

Thank you! I will look into that version!

Thanks for that link! Very cool!

I have an NIV that I use most frequently (I have lots of others, but this is my most used). We memorize both scripture and prayers (which are often parts of scripture as well).

These are the scripture verses we started with:

Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Genesis 50:20 You meant to hurt me, but God used it for good.
Exodus 12:13 The blood will be a sign to Me, and when I see the blood I will pass over you.
Exodus 14:14 The Lord will fight for you, you need only to be still.
from Exodus--the 10 Commandments
Deuteronomy 6:4-7 "Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.
Psalm 23 "The Lord is My shepherd..."
Psalm 34:7 "Taste and see that the Lord is good. Blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him."
Pslam 119:105 "Your Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path."
Proverbs 12:10 A righteous man cares the needs of his animals.
Proverbs 20:12 The ear that hears and the eye that sees, the Lord has made them both."
Matthew 7:12 Do to others what you would have them do to you.
Romans 13:10 Love does no harm.
Ephesians 5:15 Be very careful then how you live--not as unwise but as wise.
2 Timothy 1:17 The Lord has not given you a spirit of fear, but of power, love and of a sound mind.

Those are the ones we have done as a family so far. I have a few others I have worked on myself, mostly from the psalms and epistles.

Not sure if my numbering is strictly the same.

We've been using Faith and Life this year for religion. The chapters begin and end with a scripture or a quote from the liturgy of Baptism, etc. I have been choosing 1 of them and having the boys memorize it and use it for handwriting practice. I think they use NAB which is fine for us right now since it's what they read at Mass.

We have been using the songs from Sonlights Bible CD's but not the grade 2 one it has the wrong books of the bible and the verses that are in the Baltimore Catechism...

Amen,I say to you, unless you eat the flesh....John 53-59.

Matt 28-18-20 Go therefore and baptize all nations...

etc. I am working on specifically Catholic ones now.

Thank you ladies! I have started to work on prayers with her. Right now we are working on The Apostles Creed. She is only 5.5yo. Next year, we will use Faith and Life so i might just use the verses there. Thank you all!!

I've been trying to figure out how to increase our Scripture exposure for memorization. I think I'm going to try this.

We have lots of photo boxes with their dividers lying around unused. Rather than buying the index card box I'll use one of those, and when the kids do a verse for copywork, I can just slip the printed verse into the box.

Thanks for posting that method. I'm currently making flashcards in power point for our Baltimore Catechism #2 questions, and it would be nice to memorize the referenced Scripture for these as well.
