Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Any grand ideas for a cloud unit? Here is what I have so far.

~I've got a slew of books
~A "cloud types" poster
~Here is an art project that sounds neat. We're going to paint clouds with rubber cement, water color the sky over the dried rubber cement and then pull it off to make the clouds.

Any other ideas?

There are some neat experiments to "make clouds" in a jar. I'll find links later when I have more time.

You said you had a bunch of books. These are some we particularly like.
This is a beautiful book - Cloud Dance

And Cloud Book by Tomie dePaola is fun.

Last year for Ascension we went to one of the higher peaks on a mountain near us for a picnic and some time cloud gazing - a friend read the appropriate excerpts from the Bible and we just had a great day. The idea was to get as close the "heavens" as possible. I plan to make it an annual event each year after attending morning Mass.

You could also find a few art pieces that feature the Ascension.

I just thought I'd mention it since Ascension is approaching and the timing might work for you with your cloud study!

I have always been tempted to try some of Eric Sloan's books that I see in the Dover catalog - there are two about weather and one with a more artistic emphasis.

http://store.doverpublications.com/0486458652.html

Here's the two about weather. Anyone use these?

I'll be watching this thread as maybe I'll find something to bring on our Ascension picnic.

I just wanted to mention another book too....I'm not sure of the ages of your child(ren), but we like It Looked Like Spilt Milk It might go along with your art project if your child(ren) would like to make their clouds look like a something. Or it would be good for sparking the imagination of seeing shapes in clouds.

Thank you for this recommendation. I actually bought 4 of Locker's books and placed the rest in my wishlist. *smile*

We did this (mountain picnic) last year as well. It's such a neat tradition for the Ascension. And adding the cloud gazing aspect to it is great.

Here are some links:
Clouds in a Bottle
Fog Chamber

And How Do Clouds Form? goes beyond the basics to introduce variables that effect cloud formation as part of the experiment.

Melissa, this is perhaps a bit off-topic, but I was just reading at Catholic Culture about Our Lady of Good Counsel whose feast is this Thursday, and it seems her apparition involved a cloud. It might make a neat mention!

Quote:
On the Feast of Saint Mark, April 25 1467, the people of Genazzano, Italy witnessed a marvellous sight. A cloud descended upon an ancient church dedicated to Our Lady of Good Counsel. When the cloud disappeared, an image of Our Lady and the Child Jesus was revealed which had not been there before. The image, on a paper-thin sheet, was suspended miraculously.

That is neat and not off topic. I'm really glad you mentioned it. I love connections like this!

Last year my kids made the different kinds of clouds (cumulus, stratus, cirrus) by glueing cotton balls onto construction paper.

I also have some Montessori-ish 3-part cloud cards in an Excel file that I made if you are interested.

Bumping

We have been enjoying our big Arizona skies full of clouds...we always have the big skies but not often full of clouds (something to do with living in a desert .) Here's our mini unit study.

Please add your cloud fun...

Love,

Can you explain? I just found this free download and hope to get my first-ever-long-awaited laminating machine. Are these e-part cloud cards?

Love,

Yes, those are 3 part cards...though I can't tell how big they are. I use these. What a fun rabbit trail you have planned! I did want to mention that with your new laminator you could make little cloud journals for each of the kids and they could record and sketch their findings. These would be neat to keep in the car with a set of sketch pencils and the Peterson's Guide to Clouds and Weather for recording clouds.

Sounds like lots of fun!

Wonders in Weather is an easily-navigated site for kids.
