Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am looking for preschool age picture books about the saints. My ds is very sensitive about pictures that are "dark" or scary or show people being hurt. But I would like to build up our saints library. Any suggestions?

Do you have Cay's Catholic Mosaic, that is a treasure trove.

I would recommend Saints Lives and Illuminations by Ruth Sanderson. It has lovely depictions of saints from the first millennium.

And the sequel, More Saints Lives and Illuminations. It covers saints and blessed from the second millennium.

These books have wonderful illustrations. I just looked through both to get a feel for the types of depictions and the only two that might be somewhat "dark" or scary are St. George (slaying the dragon) and St. Maximillian Kolbe (portrait is shown with shadowy picture of barbed wire and barracks in the background) and really neither of those it too bad at all. In general the pictures are very gentle and peaceful.

I posted info with a listing of saints from the second book on my blog a few weeks ago.

Peacock and Mary have given excellent suggestions....I would add Can you Find the Saints? very brightly coloured and busy! The saints are all very happy and an enjoyable lot and it has activities for the children to find certain saints and symbols, so it does teach the children many things.

Out of the Catholic Moasic, for your sensitive and pre-school child, I would highly recommend, "Pascal and the Kitchen Angels" "The Holy Twins" "Brigid's Cloak" "Saint Francis and the Christmas Donkey" - Cay's list are all good of course, but these would be very appropriate.

All of Tomie dePaola's books are very good. Anne already mentioned a couple. He also wrote The Lady of Guadalupe, Mary: The Mother of Jesus, Francis: The Poor Man of Assisi, and Patrick: Patron Saint of Ireland. He also wrote one about St. Christopher, but it shows the devil and that might be a bit scary.

Pauline Books and Media Has several series for children. I just love their Along the Paths of the Gospel series (pretty illustrations on every page), but they seem to be out of print now. Amazon still has some used.

Brian Wildsmith has several beautiful titles -- Jesus, Mary, the Exodus, Joseph (Jacob's son), St. Francis,... and Demi has a book about Mother Teresa and one that my boys really enjoyed on Mary (as well as one on Jesus that I can't remember if we've read).

I still love Father Lovasik's Picture Book of the Saints. My children like it too.

I totally second Anne's rec.s on the Can you Find? series of books---great for preschoolers, and also for OT "Saints" (Bible Heroes), the Jean Marzollo series of books are great and have little songs you sing cleverly woven into the text.

Cay does have practically every picture book available that is worth your time mentioned in Catholic Mosaic. It is very complete and thorough. We have discovered some treasures that are now beloved choices for reading time. St. Kevin, for instance, is one that my four year old, VERY sensitive son loves.

The Treasure Box series also has some sweet stories of the saints and angels--- in particular, St. Therese is coming to mind. My youngest children respond well to the way these stories are presented.

For older children, I like the Glory Stories Coloring books, too. They evoke great sentiments of piety in my children, are inexpensive, and can be colored any ol' way you like!

Have fun reading!!!!

Thank you all- I do have Cay's book and have been using it- my 2.5 yo dd, though, does not have the patience to sit through some of the longer stories. I am hoping to find some middle ground both kids can enjoy- not too scary for ds, and not too lengthy for dd (because we all sit and read together). I am going to check out all your recommendations- thanks!

I love DePaola's books as well, especially Pascual and the Kitchen Angels.

We have also recently discovered Brother Juniper by Diane Gibfried and we love that one too. It does have one picture of a bare bottomed friar though!

Hey, thanks for this suggestion, Ellie! I'd never heard of this book. Sounds like my potty-humor silly ones would absolutely dissolve into giggles over this one! (Have you ever read Bill and Pete by T. de Paola? That one gets them EVERY time.... )

In addition to the traditional Fr. Lovasik books, my pre-school kids love An Alphabet Book of Catholic Saints. I found this at www.catholicchild.com

I just found this website that had some unique saint books:

Melinda,
I want to back up Pascual and the Kitchen Angels with dePaolo's Angels, Angels Everywhere which is listed in the upcoming "Christmas Mosaic" but is appropriate outside of Christmas-time. Perfect for pre-schoolers. There are hardly any words in this one but Oh! the stories both your children will be able to tell you! Be prepared to sit and enjoy their little tales as you hold them and this little book on your lap.
